Dakota three position safety

The Gentry thread sparked this.....

Today (among other things) I installed three Dakota three position safeties to VZ-24 actions and had very little trouble with them.

I bought the tap to retap the threads in the back of the bolt. The buttress threads.....

This mostly removes dirt but a little bit of chips came out too.

After the first one was done the second two was done in an hour.

I post this because I expressed frustration over them and now am installing them easily and just want to say that they are a fine safety and just take a bit of experience and a tap.

It also don't hurt to grind the ID of the bolt a bit as well.

The instructions are good and all you need is a good mill and a carbide 1/8" endmill.

There was a good thread on the LaPour safety but they are almost double the price of the Dakota and The Dakota works very well.....at least so far.

Question for you.

Just wondering if you had any trouble with then screwing on a bit too far and if so what you did about it. I have seen one that went on all the way and worked fine but could be turned even further when the bolt was out of battery such that when you try to close the bolt it won't close unless you turn the safety back to its correct position. What do you think that results from.

22,
Guess I've been lucky. So far that hasn't happened to me but I'm still a novice at this trick as I've now installed four of them and all to VZ-24.

22,
the plunger isn't engaging properly if you can turn while the safety is back. this is a very "Bad" thing as it requires you to pull the bolt to fix.

generally, just a stronger spring will fix, BUT you might have to grind/time that to lock into the detent slot on the bolt.

No, I maybe explained it wrong.

When I have the safety installed, but not on (lever button all the way forward) and I cycle the bolt so that the cocking piece is not in the cocking piece raceway, the safety will turn to the right (e.g. it will go past full engagement) which I don't think should happen regardless of whether the 3 position pin is engaged or not. this sorry state of affairs means that the bolt will not close unless the safety is moved back to the left.

Ah, might be the same thing.. but the obverse..

if you pull the bolt about 1/2 the way back, can you grab and turn it? careful, if it turns too much or you don't have clearance at the nose of your stock, it could be a hassle to get back

I have had this problem. Jeffe is right as it is a timing issue with the detent.

Vapodog-

Where did you get your supply of Dakota safeties? The Gentry thread implies that they are out of stock at Brownells.

Yes, but the detent isn't engaged if the safety isn't engaged. the safety still should not turn so far to the right as to cause the cocking piece to not be able to enter the raceway.

I must be confused as usual as I think the detent is always engaged as soon as you screw the firing pin into the bolt. It's a "line up thing". the timing is off and the "line up" isn't right.
