Its difficult to get a good quality photograph of bolt jeweling, but I wanted to let everyone here know that I just had Vapodog do some bolt jeweling for me on a couple of mauser bolts and the results are fantastic. He did a real nice job of polishing the bolts correctly, and the jeweling itself is very well spaced and very pleasant to look at. And his prices are quite reasonable as well If anyone is looking to have a bolt jeweled I highly recommend that you give Vapodog a PM and see what he can do for you.

Please describe the "correct" way to polish a bolt and also how you arrived at this? What are your qualifications? Have you been published on this subject? Thanks.
|

Ricky "Correct" means that he didn't round anything over by buffing on it to heavily. All square corners remained that way. I arrived at that conclusion by looking at the bolt before and after the job was performed. I have not been published on the subject. I assume that whether corners should remain straight is subjective rather than objective. I am sure that Vapodog would provide them either way if asked.

Ok Lucy, But are you published and what are your credentials. If empirical data isn't good enough to validate other folks, then why should you get a pass?

22 WRF, You have indeed been published on the subject! Just read your posting on the world wide web. 2952 posts and personal experience, and Vapodog's experience and extensive and knowledgable posts versus 39 posts and being called out. Please... You can say that again. I've tried a lot of ways and they all come out blurry or too shiny to see the real beauty. Vapodog did a M-70 for me and it's much nicer than the new jeweling that they came with.

I think if you add up all of Ricks posts it'd be more than 39. Looks like he's in top form like a wart on a toads butt. ______________________ Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

Hey rem721. What makes you qualified to judge 22WRF? Have you been published on the subject? Have you personaly seen the bolt in question? Since when does being published make anyone an expert? The photo that Vapodog just posted is a very good approximation of the bolts he did for me. They really look nice. So once again, I highly recommend that if you want a bolt jeweled, give Vapodog a yell. He will do a great job, and charge you a reasonable price. Not only that, but he is a very pleasant guy to work with. He tells you when its going to be done, and its done when he says it will be done. Just don't forget to include return postage. Thanks again Vapodog for the nice work!!!

Vapodog: is it possible to re-jewell a bolt. In other words, the jewelling has been worn down. It it a small herringbone pattern of jewelling. I also imagine this would be more costly than say a regular jewelling job, would it not? Thanks for any responses. Tom P

7X57MM, I rejeweled my fathers M-99 by repolishing it and just rejeweling.....it turned out fine! I also rejeweled two M-70 bolts (pushfeed) by simply repolishing the bolt and rejeweling. They also turned out fine. The process removes so little that it's possibly in the millionths.....(I've not put a micrometer on it) I'd say yes...definitely possible to rejewel. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." My point exactly, and I asked that very same question when both 22wrf and vapodog jumped down my throat not too long ago for mistakenly commenting on an object's worth. Apparently there was an unwritten rule about not commenting on objects for sale in the classifieds. Being new, I didn't know that. Rather than a polite reminder of that rule, I got threatened with having a receiver shoved up my a$$. Besides, if you bother to read this post, no where did I comment on vapodogs work. I simply asked 22wrf what the definition of "correct" was. Oddly, when I stated my own personal experience it was discounted for some reason yet, 22wrf himself states he is not an expert. I ask you then, how does that qualify him to judge waht is and what is not "correct"? Anyway, it seems our moderator has taken umbrage at my remarks so I will not comment further.

Vapodog, My smith screwed up and blued my bolts ... what might the charges be to jewed do a pair? Sure would appreciate the info. Thanks, Mike -------------- DRSS, Womper's Club, NRA Life Member/Charter Member NRA Golden Eagles ... Knifemaker, http://www.mstarling.com

Actually IMO the prettiest bolts have been previously blued. This way the bolt handle and extractor and extractor ring are a pretty blue after jeweling and the contrast is quite pretty! Just remove the bluing from the bolt but after removing the extractor and ring and jewel the bolt body only. It's quite a contrast that looks great. Rem721 What you say is true. I did ask you if you were an expert on the value of the item that Vapodog was trying to sell. However, what you say about "being new here" is not true, and you know it, and so does everyone else. None of this would have ever started if you would have been just a bit more polite to Vapodog by refraining from telling everyone that you thought the asking price for what he was selling was to high. The polite thing to do (in my opinion) is to refrain from commenting on a person's ad in that person's ad. That is all I was saying. If somebody is selling a shotgun for $600 and its only worth $200 let the guy try to sell it for $600. He will soon get the message that he is asking too much for it. Nobody needs to go on to somebody's ad and sabotage it.

Hello vapodog, I do not know whether you are published or an expert or have some special credentials nor do I care. I am not going to sign a lifetime contract with you, but only want to get a couple of my bolts jewelled and from what work you have shown, would say it is very nice indeed. I also would like to know what you charge and what the turn around time is, approximate of course. Not in a huge rush and figure cost would be a fair number. Drop me a PM if you wish. Look forward to hearing from you.

rem721 I did bother to read the post! In my opinion you did comment on vapodogs work when you discredited 22WRF. I will say that I did not realize that this was an old grudge and I will let the matter rest. For the record I thought the jeweling on the VZ-24 looked good. I see no fault at all in this photo. Looks good to me..... Of course, I am no expert on this subject either (jewelling bolts), and suspect that very few such "experts" exist. That would be a mighty limited field, requiring a true "specialist", ("one who learns more and more about less and less, until he knows practically everything about nothing") . I am 100% in agreement with the posters on this thread!! I sent my bolt to Vapodog to have jeweled AND YES, those pictures don't do his work justice. If it weren't for a glitch in the US Postal service I woulda had it back in about a week to 10 days. The cost was very inexpensive to quality to what I see as quality of workmanship. I couldn't be happier. Perhaps it is just the picture but the top of the bolt handle root sure looks slanted to me. Looks like it dips towards the leading edge.

Thanks for the kind words.....there is something about the steel in that Remington 722 bolt that just took to jeweling.....It is the prettiest jeweling I've done as it glistened better than any of the other bolts I've done. It makes me want to do my own Remington bolt now! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." In case you haven't noticed (or were too drunk to Rick0311 or is it fyj) this thread is about jeweling.....but since you want to, YES, I did that bolt handle too and you can criticize all you want as it seems that's what you do best here. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." My, my, a bit touchy aren't we? Your reaction says a lot about your insecurities. Someone once told me that you shouldn't put your work on display if you had thin skin. My commentary was simply an observation and not meant in a mean spirited way. That you chose to respond as if it was says a lot about you. Your response says even more. Keep practicing, one day you'll get it.

I don't ever get involved in ongoing discussions concerning "positive" this side versus "negative" that side. This time I must. I learned long ago that anything "positive" should be mentioned in public and anything "negative" be mentioned in private. It is NEVER what you say, but how you say it! I personally am ecstatic with the workmanship I received and believe me when it was/is said that Vapodog is a great person to work with. The most outstanding thing about this forum is that we ALL have access to gunsmiths from the self-help gunsmith along a contiuum to the top two or three in the world! If you have not been to the Scholarship Rifle build thread you need to go look at the photographs! I am sure that many of us would 'give an eyetooth' to have one of any number of the finest rifle artisans in the world's rifles. But we can't. There are many artisan's in waiting and working on reaching that pinnacle of success and are committed to providing the finest quality they can provide at their level of expertise. I for one cannot afford a $20,000 rifle. However I can afford to send my work to gentlemen who are willing to provide a wonderful service, they are very knowledgable 'specialy about Mauser actions, answers many questions on the forums and provide it at a cost that I CAN afford. Not only does Vapodog do a beautiful job jeweling bolts, but he also does real nice work threading and installing rifle barrels. He threaded and installed a .300 Win Mag Barrel on a Mauser action for my brother, and it shoots extremely well. Moreover, the price was very reasonable and the turnover time was very reasonable as well. Very refreshing is that Vapodog did exactly what was ordered the way it was ordered. Nothing more and nothing less. No excuses either. Just a good job at a good price. Try him. You will like him!!!!!!
