did you have any trouble getting the round to feed well?...did you heat treat the action?

Please tell me more about how this action handled the 458 AR.

Very interesting.

The 458 AR has been installed on 2 mausers, to date, a VZ and an FN. It is in process of going on a legacy mauser squarebridge (my personal gun)

the VZ was a range/load mule. Feeding work was about the same amount of work as a 338 winmag, with the obvious exceptions of a slightly wider box (.01 per side, rear, about .020 MORE in the frount) ...

other than that, any smith that can make a mauser feed a 7 rem, 300 win, 338, or 458 win can do this.

the rounds are designed to be a minimum of work on an action already setup for a "7 rem" or other "standard" magnums.

the other rifle is Frank's 416 AR on a ruger roundtop

Jeffe, regarding the use of the VZ-24:
Any idea what pressures you might be running on the 458 AR?.....how many shots have been fired in the VZ-24 so far?......any signs of problems of any kind? In your opinion is the VZ-24 a good candidate for a sporter in this cartridge? Have you had this action heat treated?

I have three of these and a post war FN and have no problem with such things as 280 Rem etc.....but the AR cartridges should generate a but more thrust than the standard magnums.... I'm wondering how this is working out for you.

Vapodog,
I am here to tell you, the VZ 24s i've dealt with have been VERY hard. Keep in mind I built my 550express on a VZ as well. Pressure? GUESSING 55,000range... compared to factory 270 (factory 270 and 300wsm primers scare the crud out of me) .. these are obviously lower pressure.

There is LESS bolt thrust from an AR than from a WSM, SAUM, WSSM.. as the casehead surface area is the same, and the pressures are lower.

and only a small amount more than a 338 winmag, or any of the HH based cases ...

consider that the 404 is more or less than same case as the RUM, which includes the 284 winchester. people hotrod the 404 and 284 (and it's wildcats) on mausers every day

Thanks Jeffe,
I appreciate the feedback. It gives me the confidence I needed to scrap the .375 Taylor project I had been planning and proceed with the .375 AR.
