It’s time to retire. John Lennon said, “Life is what happens while you’re making other plans.” Well a year ago I had different plans; my new plans include closing Eagle Machine Gunsmithing; buying an RV; remodeling my house; and traveling the country visiting family and friends along with seeing places we’ve been putting off for many years. Operating Eagle Machine has been one of the best experiences of my life. The folks I’ve gotten to know all over the country have made the past 15 years seem nothing at all like work to me and I thank all of you for being part of that. God bless you all.

Congrats on the retirement John! At least I can say my H&H was likely one of the last guns you worked on. Good luck and enjoy the new journey!

The problem with owning a business you enjoy means never dreading Monday mornings. On the other hand, it makes retiring difficult. I am grooming one of my employees (and contemplating an equity plan for her) to run my business and taking more and more time off, but it is hard to say goodbye. I fear I will be 75 and thinking, "WTF was I thinking? Why didn't I pull the plug earlier?"

Congrats and good luck!!!

Congrats John!

I was fortunate enough to retire just shy of my 56th birthday.

I highly recommend it. "Busier" now than I have ever been.

Enjoy! safe travels.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Hey John glad to see you are joining us in the RV life style. I know you will like this life as soon as you can adjust to not working. I still wake up at 5 am and can't seem to brake the habit.

Get you a good used diesel pusher and roll on down the road. Maybe our paths will cross some place.

Les Brooks, in my 84th yr and still driving the diesel motor home. Maybe out in NM this summer.

Have fun!!!

John,

I'm glad that you're doing what you want to do but I'm not happy that I have to find another gunsmith. Big Grin

Good luck on the road and enjoy yourself.

John,
Hope you enjoy your retirement more than I have. Been retired about 3 months and going stir crazy here, so I've got to find something else to keep myself busy!

Are you planning to close the whole operation down or sell it? There's a good crop of machinist gunsmiths graduating from tech schools that just might buy it.

Great news John, hope your health is
all good.

If you get up this way, rattle my cage.
Might be worth a steak dinner and chance
to meet.

I've been retired since 3/85 @ 40. Can't say it's been much fun with a screwed up back and
knee's all these years. Takes awhile to even
recall what working for a living was like.

Hope you can hang in there as long and it's
all good.

Best wishes, drive safe and change those air
filters on diesels. That's 95% of why they
smoke.

Hope you made a typo and didn't mean 14'. That ain't big enough!

I had a couple more jobs in mind, but I guess not.

Thanks for having known you and the jobs you did for Alice and I.
