I got the stock inletted, shaped, sanded, filled, sealed and put 3 coats of finish on it. I ran out of finish so I figured I'd snap a few pics. I really like how it's turning out and I might even finish it after 3 years animal

I love to see pics on this forum, just though I'd share a few.

Awesome looking. All that I can see that is missing is checkering, rust blue, and a RED recoil pad. Big Grin

If you don't charge for mistakes, bad decisions, procrastination and almost losing it to a dishonest gunsmith. About the same as one that took a month to build Big Grin

I put a red pad on it at first and just couldn't warm up to it. I've got three others with the red pads and just wanted something different this time.

I like it, quite nice. As too the cost question, I would bet the answer is priceless because it has been so much fun.

No shit man...that's just awesome!!!!

I really like the Snaubel forend and the Banded front sight and barrel band.....

The chambering is also well conceived as it's purely a big guy in the race....but still suitable for North American stuff.

Don't forget to post pics after checkering.....

What pattern are you thinking of?

D Humbarger, The pattern is from an old guild mauser. The owner was very gracious and sent it off to a duplicator for me and had a pattern cut. I added a cheek piece and a few other small details. Part of the bargan was he got the pattern when I was done with it CRYBABY

The wood is a Claro walnut, the blank was a real sleeper! the pictures don't convey this but the grain is very transparent. It looks like you can see 1/4" into it.

Vapodog, I'm thinking something very simple that doesn't jump out at you for the checkering. Maybe something like a BRNO21H pattern at 18LPI.

Some unknown German gunsmith designed the stock. I modified the design. Cliff Stickelstad cut the blanks on a Dakota duplicator. I fitted, shaped, sanded and I'm in the process of putting the finish on. Someone else will do the checkering.

Well... at least yours has a barrel on it, Terry.

LOL.

Yes indeed, Priceless.

I too love photographs. I think that's how I came to be here: I saw too many photographs of beautiful rifles, and had to build one. Or two. Or three.

Great wood--I love fiddleback--and I notice you opened up the grip a little.

flaco

As an aside, I got the blank I purchased from Jim Preslik up in Reno back about a week ago. Mike Kokolus did an excellent job of cutting it from the Fajen European Special pattern Idared and GrandView were kind enough to guide me too.

I took a different approach to opening--and dropping--the grip: With the help of a boatbuilder friend of mine, I cut the grip and inserted a spacer block, angled to create drop in the butt, and a more open grip. It took me a while to get used to the look, but now I'm very pleased.

I'm pretty much committed to the red pad.

I've a long way to go--I just fitted the grip cap today--but, as usual, am cautiously optimistic.

Thanks for the photos, Terry.

The bases were made by Michael Scherz. These have to be custom fitted.

Mark Stratton who posts here also does these. I like his every bit as much as this set.

Here are a couple of close ups.

The blank and the guy that did the turning was found on Ebay of all places Razzer I guess a blind squirrel does find a nut every now and then. HA!

As for the pattern, I've talked to the owner and he wishes to remain anonymous at this time,,,sorry.

Flaco, my thread, but I'm like everyone else. Get off your butt and post some pics of that rifle!

Here are a couple more pics. These didn't turn out as good, but they are in the sunlight which gives a better idea of the wood color.

Terry-

Snatched from grips of dispair, that 9.3 really looks beautiful. You are a lot further along with your project than mine which almost suffered a similar fate.

Terry, how long is that barrel, 22 or 24 inches; it looks 22 to me?

Thanks for sharing the photos and progress with us.

Again, simply beautiful; you gotta be a proud poppa.

Hello TC1,
Class act always stands out from the rest and your rifle is certainly a "class act!" Would appreciate showing us more after you do the fine tuning on the checkering, blue, etc. Can't see how it will look much better though. Outstanding.

TC1,

that is avery appealing rig.It gives a man a warm fuzzy feeling, which we all know is a good sign of something.
I also had a similar 1909 rig being put together by a F**k*ng ratbag, some years ago, and had to pull the plug. I payed for work in advance as sign of good will, and ended up walking away with an unfinished job & money owing to me,A blackburn trigger of mine he could not find, plus when he figured that I was losing interest in building the thing,he wanted a cheap deal on another pristine 1908 brazil action that I had with him. So what did I do?,I gave him the deal that he wanted, and walked away with a smile on my face.I bet he still wonders why.
bible says " when a man asks for your shirt, give him thy cloak also"
He also could not find $10,000 worth of premium exhibition walnut, that he had on consignment from a wood dealer I know. He had to go interstate to his house, and demand it. Its all laughable really.

Now,I am inspired,I like the temperature of the warm fuzzy feeling your 9.3x62 radiates, but I would not complain if I could turn it up a couple degrees to 9.3x64 with maybe a 23" tube.

Would you be kind enough to tell us the weight of her as she stands in the picture,as well as her bare barrel weight/dimensions. It would be interesting and helpful.
enjoy your little Josephine.
cheers

I think the rifle looks great. Especially the stock pattern. However, for some darn reason my eye seems bothered that the rear sight doesn't seem to be sitting straight on the barrel. Is it an optical illusion or what? sofa
