Are Winchester M70 WSM actions (300/7mm/270) the same length as a standard length (30-06 etc) M-70 action? I do know they use the standard length bottom metal...

They are not the same length. WSMs are shorter than a 30/06 (long action). There are also 2 differant bottom metal lengths, 3 if you count the WSSM. Shawn Have you cycled your PF upside down lately????? God Bless http://www.davidchristmangunmaker.com/ http://i257.photobucket.com/al...wnhound/f66262d4.jpg

Thanks Jeff, Now, would a Echols legend stock work with a model 70 classic in 7mm WSM and do you have a ballpark idea what D'Arcy gets for one of his stocks? Was looking at McMillan's G&H stock and their site mentions it won't work with late model or Montana actions. So I'm looking for something with a straight comb and cheek piece.

D'Arcy's Legend fiberglass stocks can be inletted for standard (30-06) and long magnum (.375H&H) lengths, for either the current Classic or pre-'64 Winchester actions. I don't think the stock contours would work well given the different bottom metal screw spacing on a true short action. I considered using a pre-'64 action for a short-action rifle project in a Legend stock, but felt that I was giving up some of the advantages of a true short action by doing so. I've not heard of a pre-'64 WSM rig, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if it would be a problem with feeding, etc. I ordered a McMillan stock in the Sako Classic profile (I ordered it the second week of January and still not received it) for a short action (you obviously tell McMillan to inlet it for a Winchester action). It has a straight comb and cheekpiece. I have one of these on a M70 .300 Wby and like it alot - it has a more trim forearm than McMillan's Winchester stocks (and more trim than the Legend). I like D'Arcy's stock, but also think for a short action, a more sleek stock profile fits better.
