Mr. Kehr, I am truly sorry for bringing your name into a thread that involves AR's single most "unbelievable" member. To say shootaway marches to the beat of a different drummer would be an understatement. Most people think he is a troll who says idiotic things to get a reaction. Others think he is a raving idiot who doesn't know which end is up. Shootaway, I know you have commissioned work with some great builders. I would really love for them to read some of the garbage you have posted here. Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

I used to think the first, over time the second proved to be the case. ______________________ Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

I have followed the same path as you regarding Shootaway. Do you think he would call any of the pictures of Roger Kehr's work that Grenadier posted "amateurish"? Who the heck am I kidding? He would call Jerry Fisher a wood butcher. Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. If you're serious and have an artistic bent you can contact GRS that, from time to time has classes, here, or various engravers take on students. Type in engraving school on goggle. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere. NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR. I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

Thanks! I can do just about any engraving on any CNC mill but I feel as if that is cheating. The art software on BOBCAD(.com) is great! If I try my hand at it I will post my progress. Thanks again! I just read this thread for the first time and boy am I amazed! It's quite evident that some here don't know that there are many many different types of scroll engraving. The large banknote type scroll is relatively fast and easy to do when compared to some of the tinier and more delicate UK scroll; the larger Germanic scroll is also a little faster. The French/Belgian scroll is similar in scroll size to the UK but IMO doesn't look NEARLY as good. Similarly it appears that some here don't understand the use of 'white space'. The Lon Paul rifle for instance shows what I consider to be UNattractive white space. The cutting itself may be superlatively executed but that awkwardly-shaped white space just ruins the entire appearance for me. Game scene vs scroll? Absolutely NO contest, almost anyone can do acceptable scroll after minimal instruction but putting good-looking animal life into an engraving takes a REAL artist! IMHO, there has not been a better engraver then Lynton Mc Kenzie, doesnt mean he was the best. But every time I see his engraving it just catches my eye, and really he was the only one in the field to do so untill I seen Rodger Kerr's engraving. Now if I ever decide to grow a cash crop... and I plan on having a rifle engraved, I guess I'll settle for Rodgers amateurish engraving. Match the engraving to the wood...Give me a break! _____________________ Steve Traxson

srt: I was researching a knife I was considering buying and came on this engraver's site (he engraved one of the maker's knives).....Lee R. Griffiths. I went to his web site here and saw a nice lion head he engraved on a floor plate and thought of this thread. I also noted that he says he is "taking order NOW!". You might contact him and see what he would charge and HOW LONG IT WOULD TAKE for a lion on your rifle. Just keep in mind, in engraving, less is less, and if you keep it simple it might be surprisingly affordable. For someone who's only been engraving about 14 years he has come a looong ways is and is widely respected as a top engraver. If you read his bio, his is an amazing story of how he became a excellent engraver. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. They're grape leaves and bunches of grapes, not oak leaves and acorns. Has noone here been to a Greek restaurant before? __________________________ Use enough whiskey...

Ding, Ding, Ding! We have a winner I'm surprised it took so long for my Acorns? question to get answered. My point was to poke a little fun at s-way by blaming the squirrel for eating his nuts. Hard to give much credence to s-way's critique of Roger Kehr's world class engraving if S-way can't tell the difference between an acorn and a bunch of grapes. Damn the squirrel.......Ate all the oak leaves & acorns leaving nothing but the grape vine that was creeping up it. Must of left the impression that grapes and grape leaves grow in oak trees.
