Holy cow Batman! Ford Ecoboost

12092...that's the number of miles the new longblock lasted in my truck. Driving home from a DSC event yesterday, 70 mph on I-20 about 20 miles west of Weatherford, pulling a small trailer loaded with a side by side when the truck "shuddered" once, engine light came on and power went to zero, luckily was right at an exit so managed to get off of the highway. It would still start but was rattling bad from deep down inside and smoking pretty bad. Wouldn't even pull itself up on a trailer, so...tomorrow it goes bad to the dealership for repair and when it's "fixed" that SOB will be getting a new home.

I loved renting the Ecoboost Expedition enough that I purchased a 2014 F150 FX4 Ecoboost. Had zero issues and I really enjoy it. 660 miles to empty on a tank is nice and tows my 21ft bass boat no problem. Ford sold enough of them that there will be some bad apples but they are very reliable and offer great power/fuel economy to people. It wasn't that long ago that people could not get into a new gasoline 400hp/400ftlb vehicle and get 20mpg+

My fantastic F150 Ecoboost is still being worked on, been in the shop 21 days so far. Turns out the timing chain "came apart" on the rebuilt right bank. Dealer claims not their fault and this is the first one they've rebuilt and had problems (but the mechanic working on it says it's the fourth one he's repaired and that I'm lucky because mine didn't have a broken head) Ford says there isn't any issue with these motors, but being good corporate citizens, they are going to help me out with repairs. The Ford rep wanted me to look at the damaged parts, so I went over to have a look...they had to remove the cab of the truck to make the repair, no way to get the timing cover off otherwise. Hopefully I will get it back soon, last repair took 28 days, and I'll be getting rid of it.

Sorry to hear all of this, Karl. Just bought an 18 last month to replace my 13 at 111,000mi. 3000mi on the 18 so far with no issues yet. 10spd is taking a little getting used to, but quite smooth 99% of the time. Really happy with new King Ranch package coming out of an XLT.

Another update, the dealership has had the truck 27 days today, everything put together and the cab was back on the truck this past Wednesday afternoon, only bad part the damned thing won't start and run! They worked on it Thursday and Friday without success and an "engine specialist" from Ford is supposedly coming in on Monday to solve the problem. I'm going to solve the problem permanently if I get the SOB back and it'll run long enough to get it to a Dodge dealership. What a POS.

30 day update, went by the dealership to see what, if anything, was going on with my truck and sure enough the "super tech" had been there and now the cab is back in the air and the front of the motor is lying on a table in front of the truck. "Something" came loose when they tried to start it, apparently. No estimated repair date. What a POS and it doesn't qualify for the Texas lemon law (too many miles).

I had an F150 ecoboost the first year it came out. Had a transmission issue the first 6,000 =miles but was addressed under warranty. Had four of the 6 coils fail sending it into limp mode every time.
When it ran it ran great.
Have a mega cab ram 2500 cummins now. Would not trade it: Great truck!
Still have my 96' GMC K1500 HD extended cab 8' bed. My old simple tried and true hunting buggy.
Like a Timex. Takes licking and keeps on ticking.

They determined that after replacing 3 timing chains and associated parts as well as the oil pan (plastic piece of crap somehow got cracked)that the heads were bad (these heads came on the long block they installed in May)sooooo....new heads were ordered and after 35 days in the shop, I got my truck back this past Monday. It ran just like a brand new truck! For exactly 63 miles when the motor destroyed itself, as in oil and antifreeze on the ground destroyed. Ford sent a wrecker to pick it up and they say they will "find out what the problem is", right. Didn't even last long enough to trade it in on a real truck. In the shop for 63 days since May 11. POS.

I have a f150 lariat fully loaded and like it. Maybe I got lucky or Karl got a lemon.

After this thread - I will buy a Elon musk Tesla pickup before a ford. Even his punk pickup truck.

Karl, I have serious doubts "a dealership" has the technical expertise to address the scope of work your truck has endured. I suspect it was a training exercise for them...

I may well have a lemon, but the same location has had at least four with similar problems (and ford acknowledged a problem with a TSB). Regardless, mine is junk and even if they say it's "fixed", I wouldn't trust it. Been back in their shop since Wednesday and nothing from them as to what broke this time. I agree that is a training exercise.

To anyone who owns a Ford Ecobost engine - Do yourself a favor and immediately install a Monster Catch Can Kit, change the oil every 3,000 miles regardless what the book says, watch for timing chain stretch and make sure you are current on all TSB issues. Then sell the thing before you hit 100,000 miles.

The Ecoboost is still in development...

Geeez Karl seems you've experienced everything wrong with the Ecoboost. Will be interesting to see what let loose this time.

Well...he turbo came apart this time (62,000) miles and there are "other" un-diagnosed problems as well. I think the ecoboost might work pretty well fro a truck that is used as a daily commuter and occasionally towing a boat or ATV, but not for a truck that is used as a truck. I used this one to tow a trailer with a Kawasaki Mule several times a week, occasionally tow a hay trailer with 5 round bales, and very rarely tow a 55 hp tractor. All well within the tow rating of the truck. I'll find out later this week what else has broken.

Yep...the dealership repaired the turbo and put the motor back together, started it and say that it had a very bad “knock”. They are willing to put another new motor in it st my expense, only ($10,000), I declindvand as I am out of town it is still sitting in their shop. I’ll be speaking with Ford ad soon as I’m home, not sure it’ll do much good but I’ll try.

So basically they took a sick engine, screwed it up far worse and now want you to pay for a replacement.

Nice.

Remind me to never purchase a Ford product with a Ecoboost in it.

Well, you’ve convinced me to NEVER buy an eco-boost. I’ll stick with my 2012 6.7 diesel.
