I just agreed to buy a yellow of very fine breeding.....but what name is typical for a yellow lab? It's a female yellow pointing lab

Two syllables or less please.

Custard. Lends itself to shortening to "tard" in case she don't work out. Agree about letting a grandkid, assuming you have them, name it. You could make the privilege a special reward.

My advice - KISS, Stay with 1 syllable. The dog will learn its name faster and you will come to appreciate a 1 syllable name teaching her commands.

What ever name you use, practice yelling it first.
So when they pee on the floor it's easy to say her name!

vapo, I had 2 wonderful yellow lab females I paid a lot of money for. One was named Sadie, the other Heidi (hi-dee). Great names for yellow lab females. If you don't mind sharing, who is the breeder? Here is the best lab breeder website I've ever seen: wiscoy kennel links

I've seen pups as low as $800 and as high as $4000. Here's a couple of good examples of what a yellow should look like:

I named my last one, a pretty dark yellow coated female, Nugget.

The pup is from a local breeder very well known locally for high quality hunting (and pointing) Labradors. Their pups run slightly under a grand but their pups are almost exclusively chocolates.....this one is quite unusual....at least for them.
Since I'm of Swiss heritage, the name Hi-Dee is high on my list right how!

Great!

Yellow labs should have a black nose and dark brown eyes. If they have a liver nose or eyes lighter colored than deep brown, they don't meet the standard. Just so you know.

However, as a yellow ages, it could have a black nose early in life and it can change to brown with either age, or during the cold months.

This dog does not meet the standard:

But that does not mean it wouldn't be a great hunting or pointing dog. There are 2 "types" of labradors: "American" and "English."

The American type is basically the dog you see in the last picture. Bred mainly for function and not standard. They typically are less blocky looking in the head and more streamlined. The English version would be what you see in the top 2 pics: blocky head, more solid body, yet some breeders simply make them too fat and some judges like that. I think it takes away from the balance the dog naturally has myself.

"Tegan" is also a good name, IMO. "Tucker" or "Cooper" if you get a male.

Vapo, your gonna love the pointing yellow lab. The kid I ride to work with has one. Copper just turned 2 and is really coming of age in the pheasant fields and Chukkar hills. She holds an amazing point. Strong willed as all labs but very gentle with his little children. Her name is Copper.

For years I called all my labs shane or shana depending on male or female. Saved on buying new name tags.

They were named after a favorite horse we had as kids. about the same color.

Seems like the yellow lab is the state dog of Montana...

Maggie is a great female lab name!

Good luck.

How about 'Pearl'

I also like the name 'Buttercup', it rolls off the tounge nice, original sounding, and easy to say when angry as well as not angry, but has more syllables than you liked.

I have a lab named daisy, so does everyone else.

I also like 'lollipop' and you could use 'lollie' for short.
