Shutter speed and the looooong wait between snapping a picture and the camera grinding away for many, many, many seconds before it is ready to take another picture are big drawbacks in my opinion. Don't expect to take "action" shots with the digital cameras of today. I can't even get decent pictures of my 2 year old granddaughter if she decides to move when I hold the shutter button in to get the camera to focus and then take the picture. The 35mm SLRs have the advantage in that department.
I really like my Kodak 4800, however, for still pictures of non-action type shots.
I have a Nikon D1x, and I can shoot action photos without too much hassle at all.
And if you get the D1H, then you can have as many as 5 frames per second for up to 40 frames!!
I just heard that Nikon is coming up with a new digital SLR with a Foveon 7 + mega pixel sensor - that actually translates to over 21 mega pixels, as the Foveon uses 3 seperate sensors - rather than one sensor and 3 filters.
What you say is true with the lower end/earlier digital cameras. There is a significant shutter lag with these. I was unable to take pictures of walking animals with them.
I have three Canon digital SLR's and have taken action shots with no difficulty. The EOS 1D is simply amazing for action shots. Instant verification of your shot quality and the ability to send the files around the world in seconds.

I'v messed with 35mm and larger format cameras for over 30 yrs, just picked up a Canon S45 and have been pleasantly surprised.I was a little dubious even while I was forking over the cash, but so far I haven't found anything that a 35mm can do that this thing can't.Many features in a $500 camera that you would only expect to see in a high end 35mm,and some that you would'nt have there.High resolution, motor drive functions, ability to switch between B&W and color at whim, video mode, and on and on.I'm hooked! My Brother in Law's Nikon D100 has no shutter lag that I can detect. However, the buffer only holds 4 frames. He can get about 102 photos on his 1 gig card (without compression). I was very impressed with the quality of his photos. I do like the fact that the camera uses the Nikon lens system. It's just difficult to get used to the difference in marked focal lengths. The D100 has 6.1 megapixels. I don't take enough photos to justify the cost, so I'll keep using my N80.

I got a modest film scanner recently that yields photos of around 11 meg from a 35mm frame. So far it looks pretty good and cost less than $200. My old Nikons will have to plug along for a while yet.
