I just bought a new S&W 1854 .44 mag rifle, & looking down the barrel I can see no rifling. How do they rifle their barrels ? Did mine slip through the production line with an un-rifled barrel ? If you call their customer service you can’t speak with a technical person. Any ideas ? ____________________________ .470 & 9.3X74R Chapuis' Tikka O/U 9.3X74R Searcy Classics 450/.400 3" & .577 C&H .375 2 1/2" Krieghoff .500 NE Member Dallas Safari Club

Maybe slugging the barrel would give you some idea, if only by blocking the barrel near the chamber and pouring in moulten CerroSafe there, then pushing it out from the muzzle. If the slug shows no rifling and the diameter is only about .417", that would indicate your thoughts were correct. Then, you could take it up with the merchant you bought it from. Old-timey consumer law usually began with the vendor/purchaser relationship and that is probably still a good place to start.

From the NRA review. The 19.25" barrel has broach-cut rifling in an eight-groove pattern and at a 1:20" twist rate

Frank, it is possible. Years back when Interarms was importing the Rossi/Puma 92, I ordered one in .44-40 and darn if the barrel had not been rifled. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author
