Leverguns from Wild West Guns
Does anyone have any experience with their leverguns? I am looking at their 04 model in 454 Casull, or their larger model in 45-70 and 457 magnum. While I like the fact that the 04 is smaller action, and the 454 is plenty for eastern whitetails in the woods, I could download the 457 magnum/45-70 to 454 levels easily, or go with full power loads when needed. Any thoughts?

I have a lot of experience with my lever guns, but I have no idea what you are talking about.

Their ad kinda reminds me of the old Herter's stuff...everything is "world famous" and "the best in the world". I'm suprised they don't call their '04 rifle the "Model Perfect".... Big Grin

Anyway, I never heard of them either until your post. Will be interesting to see if anyone with actual experience of their stuff provides info about their experiences.

In the meantime, I'd be cautious of the ad hype....is hard for me to comprehend anyone "specializing" in as diverse things as lever guns, AR-15's, tactical rifles, and big bore bolt guns all at once and being super at all of them. Sounds more like general areas of interest to me.......

That's NOT to suggest their products may not be very, very good. They may indeed be top drawer. I just would suggest you be very careful with your initial expenditures there unless you get some excellent feedback from other customers first.

I've never sent anything to them for a conversion nor do I know anyone who has used one of their products. However, they have been around for a while. I first went to their website back around 2000 or so. At least, that's what I recollect.

All wild west is doing is modifying marlins and they've been doing it for a long time.I spoke to the owner at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas regarding his marlin modifications.Do a google search on wild west guns. http://www.glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=264026Read about a customized Ruger Redhawk done by Wild West Guns for a very satisfied owner.

The WWG 457 Magnum is a superfluous cartridge. The Marlin 1895 can be modified to cycle a 2.7" round giving one the same performance as the WWG 457 Magnum with the 45-70.

I had no idea this could be done. What is involved for a gunsmith to do this? Is it an expensive job to have this modification done?

Usually a cheaper modification if you are getting other work done. See the Mic McPherson article in the October 1998 issue of Precision Shooting magazine. Dave Clay can get the Marlin 1895 45-70 to reliably cycle up to a 2.75" round depending on the bullet. It involves modification to the bolt face, cartridge carrier, ejector and ejection port. Try Dave Clay.

I had my gunsmith do the work, using WWG parts -- I didn't want to wait, Jeff's skilled, and installation is simple.

I stayed with the regular 45-70 chambering -- I didn't feel a need for more power, although I've been thinking about getting it converted to a 457 WWG mag, provided it would still be able to handle a Garret 45-70. They really are excellent. The once you handle a rifle built with their components, you will not want to go anywhere near a regular Marlin.

I've put about 1.2K rounds through mine, in many different conditions, and loads from cowboy plinkers, to Garret 540gr -- all worked wonderfully. I REALLY like that gun. My brother handled mine, and ordered another identical to it.

The real winner in their lineup will be the 500 SW which cannot be put on any other action without blow-up.
They may even be selling it now.

i have had 2 conversions done by David Clay and a 30-30 worked over but not takedown.
I can no longer recomend him as the last rifle i sent took 14 months to finish and o had to call him every month to check on it (he told me 4 months). the work was sub par in areas and the extractor still isnt working properly on the SS 45-70.

I had a master gunsmith who was in demand for his creations but one had to be aware of the several years wait to get a weapon. The busier they are the longer the wait WWG is busy so be patient!

I bought one of their first "Alaska Guide" guns in 45-70 when I worked next-door to WWG on Old Seward; they've moved and so have I since then. I guess I've had it about 7 years and it's been very reliable, having hunted Kodiak, Central Alaska, and New Mexico without a hitch. The accuracy of this rifle inside 150 yards is amazing. Mine has their quick-detachable "Scout" type Leupold scope on it which works great.
