My eyes aren't what they used to be but I want to use my 1920's vintage '94 in 32 Special on an upcoming cougar/lynx hunt with Doug McMann. My question is can a holographic sight be mounted on the barrel using the original Buckhorn site dovetail. Any recommendations on a brand of sight for the '94?

All of them that I have seen mount to a rail/weaver base. A gunsmith might be able to make a short rail that fit into the existing dovetail. If I was going to do something like that I would have Gary Reeder do it.

I would look at the Burris or Leupold

Read the review on brownell site before you buy. I talked to folks at Doug Turnbull about a similar mount for my 94 one time and he was in process of developing one. I never followed up to see if they are actually available.

Mark,
Have you tried a receiver mounted peep sight?
This solved the iron sight problem for me and now I have "peep" sights on my Winchester 1892, 1886, and 1895 and I also had one on a Ruger .44 mag autoloader. All these rifles were plenty accurate enough for hunting.

I put a fiber optic ghost ring sight on my 94 and I like it a lot.

You have to cobble it up yourself by purchasing this sight from Brownells:

http://www.brownells.com/rifle...-ring-prod30914.aspx

and toss the base part, and then use this base:

http://www.brownells.com/rifle...LLIAMS%20GUN%20SIGHT

Which is a Williams WDOS base. It seems you can't buy just the base from them any more, but that is what I did.

I also put a wide front blade, and I am hoping to put a tritium insert into it at some point. I also replaced the sight hood with a larger one from a Model 70. If yours has a hood I'd suggest that as it centers the blade much better in the sight picture and the ghost ring covers it visually. IMHO this is a great setup as the fiber optic dots help get everything lined up quickly especially towards twilight, the ghost ring mounted forward also helps with pointability and you do not have to take your eyes off the target that much.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents, good luck and have fun!

You could also try getting something like this, I suspect you will probably have to slightly modify it:

Just noticed this one, which was designed for mounting a red dot sight and answers your original inquiry:

Thanks for all the information. I ended up buying a Burris site and a receiver mount from Turnbull. I think it's going to be the cat's ass.

Thanks all. I think I'll get a few Williams sights and have at it.

A Lyman tang and a red or green front sight is the fastest sight Ive used on a Winchester.

If you get a peep for the win. rear sight dove tail ( on the barrel) its out too far from the eye it doesn't work very well at all, at least it didn't for me...

But for a Lion bobcat or Lynx hunt, I would think you would be shooting them in a tree or on a rock cliff at 10 to 15 yards..I use my regular iron sighted 25-35 Win for that sort of hunting..but maybe they hunt them some other way, dunno??
