Have a chance to get a fairly new Browning 71 in .348 Win. What's to say about qualtiy compared to the orignal Winchester 71. For a good prize is it a must buy?

Can't say enough good about the Browning Mod. 71 in terms of quality build, overall fit and finish, top drawer from my experience. Certainly not the collector value of the original Winchester, but as for performance/accuacy the Browning is generally considered superior. Action is about as smooth as you will find and the 71 was supposed to be an imporovment over the '86 design and to do that you had to really go the extra mile. Whether carbine or rifle, the 348Win. caliber is one outstanding hunting cartridge. Fit it with a good receiver sight and you will be pleased with accuracy out to 200 yards. Some are offering modern sights, dots, etc., but not the thing to do in my opinion.

MFD, thanks for your detailed answer. What would be your suggestion for a sight. I'm used to shoot with scopes e.g. on my Marlin 1895 with a leupold 3,5-10x40.

A friend is using a M71 for boar hunting. He´s using a doctor sight, installed on the front bridge with an EAW "Schlösschen". I testfired it and its OK. I realoded same rounds for him, factory Ammo is very rare. But reloading is easy, and the Hornady bullets are good as well. I mean, this option, for installing a dot-sight would be a bit better.

One question. How "good" is this good prize?
At Egun I saw same used and "nearly" new, M71 rilfes. Roll Eyes
The gun store "The Duke" have really new Browning M71 rifles, Grade 1 and High Grade, rifles and carbines. From 1650.-€ up.
When I would have the money, I would buy one. Great rifles, with the smoothest action I handled.

Other than standard "open sights" I have found the Williams receiver sight(peep sight) to be very excellent on the 71 at typical ranges the rifle would be used. Not sure what you will be hunting, but with a little practice one can become quite accurate with the rifle/cartridge combination with such a sight. No doubt the modern "red dot" type of sight will work, but to me it just does not belong on a Model 71 levergun nor a 1886 levergun. As opposed to the 86, the 71 is already drilled and tapped on the left side of receiver to accept the use of the sight I mentioned. Check out Williams Gun Sight web site and you will find suitable model for the 71. The 71/348Win. is capable of taking all but the most dangerous of game. Brass is available for reloading purposes in the U.S. but do not know about your location??

Hope you are able to secure the Browning 71 for they are a delight to hold and action is as though on ball bearings. Yes, I like the Browning 71

later,

martin

Martin Du weißt ja, TheDuke hat happige Preise; habe bei gunbroker deutliche günstigere Angebote gefunden. Mal sehen, wen ich "drüben" überreden kann für mich zu kaufen.

@MFD and Duggaboye, thanks for your comments. Seems like that I will rob my piggy bank to buy the rifle. Question is only: where to buy. There are better offers in the US.

I have a Burris FastFire II on my Winchester 86EL using the Turnbull mount mentioned above. It's a dandy rig. The FF II replaced a Williams Foolproof, which I like, but the FF II works much better, and is only slightly larger than the replaced receiver sight. I think it even looks good.

Does anyone currently produce a bolt peep for the 71? Just looks a lot cleaner that the side mount units although I suspect there is far less adjustment possible and probably a bit less sturdy.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

I have a carbine version. Excellent gun. Very accurate. Bought it in the late 80's when they came out and I still have it today. Recently bought another one NIB and sent it to Turnbull to have it converted to 50-110.

Jeff, I have a m71 that is converted into a 50 Alaskan. It has a really long barrel, about 34" and was made on one of the high grades with the gold elk and deer on an engraved receiver. Pretty good gun.

If you go with a peep sight try the Merit adjustable iris peep disk.

You can instantly select the size of the "hole" you are looking through, for different light conditions.
