the 50 alaskan variety is called the 476 gnr while the 45-70 blown out is called a 475 gnr both verrrrrrrrry cool

boom stickhey buckeye...
great gun!
its the pistol bullets (275 gr. xpb's) and the trimmed down case and reg. rifle bullets that appeal to me. can you immagine hucking a 500 gr flat nose solid out of a marlin! you can do that too. try trimming the case down and spitting out 525 gr flat nose elephant slammers.

buckeyeshooterIt's a pretty effective deer zapper with the 300 grain Barnes original at 2600fps. I've not shot anything larger with it yet.

boom stickDETAILS PLEASE...

who was your smith and would you reccomend him?
thanks...

buckeyeshooterI am using Reloader 7, CCI primers and Starline cases -- am on the road so don't have my info with me. I use the Barnes original in 300 and 450 and I plink with a lee cast at 500 grains. Accuracy is very good, an inch or less at 100yards with my best handloads.
The gun was done by Turnbull Restoration. They do very good work and I would recommend them.

RoosterBack in the late 80's Gary Reeder straightened out the 45-70 and necked it up to a 475. It'll do 2,000 fps with a 430 gr. LBT.

TwentyTwoboom stick: Back in the mid-1950's, The American Rifleman ran a short article about a wildcat .47-70 in a Winchester 1886. The rifle's barrel had a bad case of pitting. In consultation with a gunsmith, the owner found that he could feed a .47-70 round (.45-70 case expanded to .47) from the magazine and eject it from the chamber with minimal modifications. So the owner had the barrel rebored and re-rifled and the 1886's action lightly modified as needed. The owner used cast bullets, but I forget the exact weight or diameter. I have also forgotten the ballistics of the .47-70 wildcat, but I doubt that there was any attempt to exceed the velocity of factory .45-70 ammunition. The owner reported that his wildcat .47-70 was a satisfactory rifle for its intended use. I no longer have my copy of that particular issue of AR, so I can't give any more specific information.

Lefteris Vassiliadisboom stick,
There is also the 475 JDJ (45-70 necked up to accept .475 bullets) that SSK Industries made barrels for the T/C Contender.

I have a Marlin converted to 475 GNR. Nice little gun. It has a bull barrel 20 inches with an oversize lever.
If you want something with more "oomph" Gary is now making a gun in 476 GNR which is a 50 Alaskan necked down to 475 caliber. It is not a tapered case, but rather a fairly steep shouldered cartridge. Based on the velocities and bullet weight, it looks like it is the ballistic equivalent of the 475 Nitro Express #2

boom stickyeah i saw that lfaler...looks good...
from the website...
This is a loaded 476 GNR and a 375 grain LBT that went thru 4 hindquarters of a large range bull. It went thru hip to hip on one bull hanging and then on to the second bull and thru both hips on that one and then hung up in a pile of fresh hides. It expanded to almost the size of a quarter. Both bulls were probably 650 to 700 pounds, so it went thru a measured 7 feet of meat and bone and 2 inches of stacked fresh hides.
this would be a fuuuuuuuuun round

osoksniperWill the Marlin action hold back a 411 hawk? Does marlin have any lever actions in a 06 length eject like Browning does? Just wondering, a 411 on a marlin would be the doins. Talk about ultimate efficiency and range and low recoil to performance ratios...wow!!! check out
www.z-hat.com for 411 stats.
SHOOT WELL.
LOAD BETTER.

boom stickthe marlin wont do the 411 hawk, sorry. the marlin does cases that are 2.1" ish. the hawk cats are great but better suited for other rifles namely the rem 7600 pump action with a folding stock and red dot sight system.

also the browning blr is a route you might want to go. that will do almost anything you want.
