Don't know if anyone has seen anything on them, but I picked up a copy of some gun rag the other night over at Wally World, while my son and his buddies were looking at a few odds and ends in the camping/sporting section.... There was an article on Marlin's new "Ballistic Tip type loads and bullets' for lever actions that I thumbed thru..... However what really caught my eye in there somewhere ( this was last week)... was Marlin intoducing their new XLR rifles to compliment the new Plastic Tip loads... It was in the section for new product offerings for 2006.... Offering this in the 30/30, 35 Remington, 444 and 45/70, will be a new stainless rifle in each calibers.. ( I already have one of the stainlesses that were new a few years ago in 30.30, with a wood stock).... However, what caught my eye, is that these will be offered with a grey laminate stock and forearm! Talk about a very attractive looking rifle!!!! I never planned to get anything to ever replace or augment my 25 yr old 444 Marlin.... that rifle has taken some really spectacular deer in the Midwest... and it is definitely a stopper! But a 444 in Stainless with a grey laminate stock!..... Well I am cleaning out a spot for one to reside in my gun cabinet as we speak.... Yeah it may be a year or so before they are available to the "Masses"... but I will patiently wait.... Not many new rifles fire me up anymore, as I prefer to rebarrel and restock some of my current rifles.....But a Stainless Steel and Grey Laminate Factory rifle in 444.... Just have to have one of those.... The picture in the magazine under new products sure looked 'awfully purdy!".... Combine that with a 444 and a Hornady XTP load at a reduced 1700 fps or so....I will be 'farting in Tall Cotton"... as a friend of mine says..... cheers seafire

Here is a link for you guys... this is pretty cool in my book....not sure why they say they are special for the new polymer tipped rounds... http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/xlr/default.aspx cheers seafire

They are special because of the 24" barrels that let develop much of that extra velocity they crow about. Nice lines though. I've always fancied a Winchester 64 and this is close. Now if it were blued with a walnut stock, I'd order one tomorrow. The beauty of the second amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it. -- Thomas Jefferson http://tcbunch.com

I'm with you seafire ... 444 Marlin in gray/stainless. I've wanted a 444 for a few years now, even waffled around a bit at the 450s vs. the 444s, but this thing looks just too nice to let slide. One question though -- do any of you guys know how to take the creep/slack (for lack of a better term) out of those Marlin levergun triggers? ====================================== Cleachdadh mi fo m' féileadh dé tha an m' osan.

Also, a lot of the extra velocity comes from comparing the new 160 grain bullets to the old 170 grain bullets. But the new bullets have more energy and carry it farther with the new soft plastic tipped bullets. There is nothing that cannot be accomplished with brute force and ignorance

Now if they only offered the stainless 24in version in a take down model. Sales would go through the roof. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

A take down model would be **REALLY** sweet. Do any of you have any idea what the ballpark MSPR is going to be? I think you can pick up a base model 336 from WalMart for around $320 - $350 or so. I haven't really priced them, however. ====================================== Cleachdadh mi fo m' féileadh dé tha an m' osan.

I paid $460 this past April for my stainless guide gun. Adding 6 inches of barrel should not add to much to the price. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I can see another Nonneman conversion from 30-30 to 307 in my immediate future! And when they offer it in 35, a Nonneman conversion to 356. And then maybe a Nonneman conversion to 260 (with rn bullets)! Jeff

260Remguy, I had a long talk with Mr. Nooneman when I got my .356 conversion back. He seemed to think it made more sense to just do a .30-30 AI rechamber rather than going to the .307. Do you really think you gain that much over the AI with the .307? I have a 1980 vintage 336 that needs some TLC and while I'm working on it I'm torn between a rechamber to .30-30AI or have him rebarrel to .25-35AI....which is about $400 more but would be a great little gun!! There are JUST too many choices!! The year of the .30-06!! 100 years of mostly flawless performance on demand.....Celebrate...buy a new one!!

I had a new 336 XLR in 30-30 in my hands today very nice. It is on the list in 444 or 450 when they show up which is in about 30-45 days from now I was told. The price for the one I looked at was $590.00 that was in Spokane WA. Hoeram NRA Benefactor Member USAF Ret.

I was able to get a price quote on the 444 XLR.... $630.00 was what my local dealer quoted me..... Bought my current 444 in 1982 for $219.00 at Mills Fleet and Farm in Minnesota..... cheers seafire

you guys have gotta be kiddin about those prices. i just asked for a price for a standard 336 in 30-30 here in Oklahoma last week and got $380. why in the world would you pay up to $630 just to get a laminated stock, and 2 more inches of stainless barrel.?? i have a 336 that i got when i was 15 years old.....40 years ago. there is absolutely nothing that a stainless barrel and a laminated stock could do to improve that rifle's performance and handling. man, $630, that has got to be right in the middle of the category of "fad buying". in any case......if ya gotta fad-buy, a rifle is better than most things. God knows, i've been guilty of it myself...

My interest, as per previous posts, lies with the new XLRs in 30/30 calibre. In Australia, I think it is fair to say that the the 30/30 in the past Winchester and whoever makes rifles for this calibre does for lever action weapons. It is favoured as a close quarter weapon, particularly dangerous pig shooting. Do any posters believe that the longer barrel and the Hornaby ( and no doubt others to come) ammo will see them switching weapons for more accurate longer distnace shooting. If this was the case, IMHO , I would have thought that shooters would turn to centrefires.

Dr. Strangelove, I've heard that the smiths at WildWestGuns do good work, but that overall the company can be a little difficult to work with due to some personality issues with their management and/or supervisor? Can anyone expound on that? I've thought about a guide gun for a while too, because I'd like a break-down of some type, but I've heard several discouraging things about actually working with the folks at WildWestGuns in Alaska. ====================================== Cleachdadh mi fo m' féileadh dé tha an m' osan.

Ben589 i think you are right... i had big time trouble getting those parts from them and after a phonecall, i could understand that they had some, should i say ersonal problems selling parts to some european countries... not scandinavia... my parts had to be purched by someone within U.S.A. i could not even pay for the parts from here... my impression on those 2 parts i received was, that it was real quality, easy to install, with the right tolerances... the guide gun is a sweet shooting and handling gun in anyway you look at it... if you have a need for 45/70 power, this is the gun... on the firing range, i impressed a friend of mine, who is not into lever actions , because they are inaccurate... as i said to my friend: you can have the most accurate 30/06 in the world, but if that bear is 15 feet away, you would wish you had a 45/70 lever... and then i gave him a handfull of cartridges and made him shoot a tree 15 feet away into matches... whwn he had shot up all the ammo, he just stood there with a funny, but well known grin on his face... and he could see why some folks use leveractions... i have had no regrets, getting my Marlin guide gun... not even the price made me think twice... (close to 1100 §§) hefty price? that's europe in a (nut)shell... An apple a day keeps the doctor away... If you can strike me!

Regarding the issue of the 307 vs. 30-30AI. Nonneman told me that he is concerned about being able to get 307 brass at some point in the future. Maybe I should be, but I'm not. Also, Nonneman's 30-30AI loads might be at or beyond the maximum recommended level. Jeff

You can order the Wild west parts from brownells, and have them installed by your smith -- they make a GREAT trigger -- is there any noticiable difference by switching to their ejector -- I tried switching to it, just because I thought it would be better -- I'm taking mine to Africa -- but my smith basically said that it's simply not needed. Jeff, I'm going to pick up a .30-30AI reamer and see how I like it. Even more reasonable loads are a pretty good improvment over the stock .30-30 whihc is pretty good just as it comes out of the box. When I get it working, I'll let you know what I find. BTW, Widener has lots of .307 and .356 Brass. bill, in total agreement.... It is going to make me look long and hard at it... I was originally expecting more in the $400 range... However, the last time I got a rifle from this dealer.. he allowed me to trade in a Ruger VT that had a barrel that was getting close to the end of its reliable accuracy life... offered me $400.00 for it toward a $650.00 Savage 12BVSS.... I jumped on it... considering I had bought the Ruger for $300.00 and had put 5 to 6000 rounds thru it, and I got to keep the 8 x 32 Tasco custom shop scope it had on it when I bought it.... So if I can get a good trade in on another of my rifles that I consider surplus.... I will probably go with it.... my new rifle buying days are coming to an end with the prices nowadays... Most of my shot out ones will see a re barrel... But I am a sucker for the XTRs in 444 and 30/30...Unless Boyd's starts making laminate stocks for those also... plus I love the 24 inch barrel.... I bought a Model 94 a few years ago, strictly because it was available with the 24 inch barrel...the 20 inch barrel makes me feel like a "Walmart deluxed hunter'.... but hey, that is cheaper than the Kimbers with the Leupold Vari X 3 scopes I'd love to have.... a $600.00 rifle is not too expensive when you have $1500.00 rifle tastes....

On the subject of .30-30AI vs. .307 Win, I'd take the .307 any day if I wanted power. A moderate load will perform well using the sturdier, standard, .308 brass, while the loads have to be a tad warmish in the thinner (weaker) .30-30 AI brass to get the same ballistics. And, you don't NEED .307 Win brass. The standard rimless .308 brass works just fine in the .307, and extracts well too. On a different subject, I sure do wish Marlin would bring that new grey half-mag rifle out in .25-35. I'd buy a pair of those in a heart-beat, especially if they made it with a 24" or 26" barrel in that chambering. My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.
