As you know I have been looking into getting a lever action for short range hunting. I was down visiting my dad over the weekend and he pulled out of his closet a 25-35 marlin and 30-40 winchester and gave them to me! I never knew he had them. My great-great grandpa bought both of them new or nearly new. The .30 for him and the 25-35 for my g-g grandma, the marlin has a manufacture date of 1898. Now for the bad news, both stocks have both been cut off and the good 'ol red recoil pad screwed on. They are both getting a bath tonight, and I will be heading to the range later this week. Question: neither of these have been shot for over 35 years, is there any danger as long as the tubes are clean?

If the rifles are in good working order, and the barrels are free of obstruction you should be good to go.
When you say a 30/40 winchester , I think you mean a 30/40 craig ?
That would likly be a model 1895.
You can find them in prety rough shap that have a decent piece of wood,
They made the same rifle in 30,06 and many of those rifles were prety well torn up , as the rifle just was not up to the cartridge with full house loads.
If you show me a picture of your winchester I might be able to tell you some things about that might help you find a stock.
Mine, ie a sadle ring carbine in 3040 craig and its a hoot !
