boom stickhelp me with my idea...
my idea is to make a 2.1" version of the 375 ruger for the 450 marlin
since we are dealing with the .532 rim and casehead exactly like the 450 marlin what about a 2.1" version?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
it can also be blown out straight and necked to the 458 for the cheapest conversion and be a chamber cleaner for the 450 marlin. dont know what the possible gains would be

but using a shortened 375 ruger dies ect would be cool for a woods cart in a marlin lever gun.
also the 411, 358 versions would have their charms too

what can you add to this idea???
lets call them the boom stick woods rounds fer now. thanks!

the 411, 375 and 358 versions could keep the original body taper and shoulder to keep costs down. should be a pretty potent woods cart in a handy marlin lever action.

boom sticksame thing goes for the 350 remington mag...just rechamber and viola!

laredo kidWhy not a 458 WSM ? Dies and reamers are already available - should be able to use 450 Alaskan data as a starting point. I believe they are about the same case capcity. I wish some one would build one on a 450 XLR to see if it has enough preformance increase to make it worth while.

this idea would be the cheapest best feeding instead of the wsm's. the wsm's would be better but this would work in a marlin as well as a blr

BusMaster007The ideas here have a lot of merit.

nordrsetaWhy work with such a small case? I look at the rim diameter of the 45/70 (.608) versus that of the .416 Rigby (.590) and find myself wondering if a 2.1 inch Rigby case would fit the cartridge lifter and leave enough chamber wall thickness (case body diameters: .505 - 45/70, .512 - 450 Marlin, .532 - Ruger, .555 - WSM, or .589 - Rigby). Just a stray thought...

brasskeeperI like the idea of a new 375 or 358 cartridge in a lever gun.

remboI've often wondered if my Marlin 375 Win could be reworked to a 375/45-70....:-)..with the loading gate and the boltface opened up like the 1895's and a 45-70 shell lifter...maybe it would work...

Will a 375 JDJ (375/444) run through a Marlin 336/444/1895?

The 457 Wild West Magnum is a superfluous joke. All you need to do is modify the Marlin 1895 carrier and ejector to get it to cycle 2.67" 45-70 rounds and you have the same thing in a 45-70.
About .532" is as large as you would want to go on the Marlin 1895 platform. There would be scant meat left under the barrel threads for something based on a Rigby case.
You learn something new everyday whether you want to or not.

Low WallJames Gates drew up this design for the .375 and .416 ...If you search on the beartooth site you will find that they later decided that Rem .350 brass would be the easiest to use....last I heard no one ever had one made up even though there was lots of interest both at beartooth and leverguns.com

Tyler KempHow long of a cartridge is it possible to make a lever gun take? A 45-120 would be mighty fine, but considering I know nothing of gunsmithing, it would be expensive and probably unpractical...but still cool.

jackfish2.85" is about the maximum you will get into a Brownchester 1886. The Marlin 1895 can be made to cycle 2.7" rounds. The Winchester 1895 will handle 3.4" rounds.

Tyler KempWow, you could do a 45-120 in the Winchester 1895 if bullets were seated DEEP, or brass was trimmed back to 3 inches, with only .4 inches of bullet showing. Probably too short, but you could do a custom wildcat out of that. Or a 45-110 would be more practical, but the loads I find online are lighter than 45-70 loads...

How much pressure can the Winnie 1895 take, what about a longer belted case...would that work? Someone's probably laughing, I have no clue about actions and stuff.

Idaho SharpshooterTyler,
there is not any way to fit the 45-70 case sized brass into an 1895 magazine box. Sorry.
