is that modern or 1873 ballistics(when fired from a rifle)?
i assume they used lead bullets(unjacketed, in lack of a better word) back then?

1873 ballistics. Plain lead bullet. Modern ammo is loaded the same because of old Winchester 1873's and Colt SAA's. There was a high velocity loading for the Win 1892 and other strong guns but it is long gone. Don't remember the ballistics for that-maybe 1500fps?

What 44/40 do you have? I have an article around here somewhere by Ken Waters that has loads for old and newer 44/40's rifle and pistol.
