I have it in my head that I will have a lever gun in 348 winchester. What are the differences between Winchester and Browning? Also, who could make a custom rifle? Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Depends on the vintage of the winchester. The reintro winchesters have tang safety and rebounding hammers. The 'original' winchesters are mechanically the same as the Brownings. Turnbull Restoration is the choice for custom rifles or 'restoring' the new rifles to original specifications.

I've owned several of both. The Browning are much tighter, more accurate and much cheaper. I had nice Dakota Sling stud inletted in the butt and had the forend cap modified to resemble the deluxe Win71. The Wins are nice, but the Browning outshoot the Wins any day of the week. I think this is mostly due to tighter chamber/throat tolerances. This seems evident when you mike fired brass from both. The Browning 71's don't have a half cock, not the rebounding hammer and tang safety. Keep the Winchesters in the safe. Shoot/Hunt the Brownings.

My search, question was about .348, not 358. I bought a browning 71, 20 inch barrel, new in box, $1300.00 now I just have to get the right sight set up on it, and some sling swivels.

I put a lyman 66 on an extra-light 1886 45-70. This should work well on the 71.
