I have used a Williams Foolproof reciever sight on a 98 mauser for many years for snap shooting at running game and found it to be perfect.

This year I tried a very wide V because I have read so much about them being god for close snap shooting. I found I was sometimes hitting high because I let the bead get too high in the rear sight.

I could stop it by concentrating on keeping the bead down in the botom of the V where it should be but that took my concentration off the target and it definitely slowed me down.

If you have good eyes the diopter with the insert thrown away is the way to go. It is not only fast it is also accurate.

If you have poor eyes some kind of optical glass. A heavy wide V such as you get on the CZ rifles is good if you are some place you can't replace the rear sight should it get damaged.

That's exactly how the ghost ring rear sight works. In a rush you don't even see it, you just look through it wiithout noticing it. That's the whole idea.

Your eye naturally centers itself with the front post in the ghost ring sight - no need to consciously do it when you take aim. It's hard to believe to those who've not used them much but it works and even with a larger aperture you'd be surprised how accurate they are.

You might like the set up I put on my 1895 45/70. i have a brockman set up that has a spring loaded ghost ring that pops up when I remove the Leupold 1X4 VX 2. The VX 2 is very fast on 1 power and I have learned to shoot with both eyes open. But the ghost ring is probably a little faster. I feel the scope is good for 200 yards,
And in skilled hands with good eyes the ring probably is to , but My 46 year old eyes probably ought to stop at 100. One warning beetween the brockmans setup, the tally rings and the taller front sight I needed , I spent 250.00...tj3006

I just mounted a Marble full buckhorn sight on my 1894 Marlin .357 and put 40 rounds down range tonight. After a couple sighting rounds, I was able to keep a 2" group at 50 yds, just like I could do with the small appature in the Williams 5D. At 25 yds it was very fast to aquire target and hit soda cans. I shoot with both eyes open...really fast...wish I could align six gun sights that quick!!

Can anyone direct me to someone who makes a stock that will fit my 1895G. The original stock comes with too much drop to use on moving game. It's ok when you have a standing target but when an animal is on the move and a quick mount is needed I end up looking at the hammer.

I currently have a .45-70 guide gun set up with the XS Ashley ghost ring shooting a 405 grain hard cast at 1600fps. As soon as the stock hits my cheek everything is lined up. Its very accurate and is just like shooting a shot gun.
