I'm planing to get a 30/30 Win and found a couple of used ones. One is a 94E Trad. and the other is a Marlin 30AS. The Marlin is listed for approx $50 more. I havn't seen them yet, but assuming both are more or less in the same condition which would you get? Any difference in strenght/accuracy between Marlin and Win.? Later I'll probably get a scope for it (variable Leupold or similar in the 1-6x range)

Welcome to the forums! I own both Winchester 94s and Marlin 336s. I have both in 30/30 and a MArlin in 35 Remington. Between both of them I prefer the Marlin action better. Accuracy in my Marlins tend to run a biit better than the 94 but both are more than accurate out to deer hunting ranges. Look at both and see which you like best. Good luck!

Thank you. Actually I've been a member for a while, but my account disapeared during the last upgrade of the forum software so I had to register again. To my eyes, the Win has a slightly more "classical" look, but I've heard the Marlin action is a little better... Kinda wish I could get both...

No question if you're going to scope it, the Marlin is the way to go. Also to clean from the breech, take one screw out of the Marlin and you are in business. The Win is a complicated mess.

Iron Buck, how do you like the .35Rem. Been thinking about getting one - I believe it takes over where the .30/30 leaves off. Love my 336SS .30/30 and would like something similar, just a bit more grunt.

HiWall, I think you may find that the .35 fills your bill. It offers a little more performance. In practical terms, not a whole lot with tradtional loadings, but some. Buffalo Bore ammo was offering a loading for the .35 that appeared to be more powerful. Might check with them to see if it is still available.

Thanks pow, I am loading the .30/30 with 170gr projectiles and would use heavy projectiles in the .35 - at least 200 and maybe 220. I think Speer make a 220fp. Will check it out, it should be a healthy step up from the .30/30.

I love the old 35. The added frontal area and weight seems to make a difference on deer that I hit with it. Nice & short blood trails I actually prefer it over the 30-30.

I picked up the Marlin today. The Win. was older and not in as good condition as the Marlin. Now I just have to find some time and take it to the range... Thx to those who replied.
