There are various bears out there that are all basically brown bears. I understand the difference between brown and grizzly in terms of SCI classification. Now what are - Glacier bears? Barren Ground Grizzly bears? Coastal Grizzly bears (in BC?) Inland or interior Grizzly bears? Mountain Grizzly Bears? All the same but live in different locales? Please teach me.

What about the Drop Bear? ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

Glacier bears are simply another one of the many color phases of black bears. they come completely black, white or cream color, cinnamon, brown and various combinations. Brown Bears are simply well fed, oversized Grizzlies. Or Grizzlies are underfed and undersized brown bears. And Polar Bears are white but can breed with Grizzlies. A bit off topic. But you also have different brown bears in Russia and also in Asia...I think they are similar to our grizzly bears in size for the most part. In India there is a himalayan black and brown bear. Different from the sloth bear as found in most of India.

Thanks all. I was under the impression that there were a bunch of different bears - like whitetails. Seems there are a couple the rest are a result of food and location. Peeping bears are a bit creepy!

Glacier bear: a color phase of black bear that shows a grayish blue hue color hide, I believe that the population that shows this color phase is kind of isolated from others. Barren ground grizzly bears: this are very small, probably the smallest, and very colorful thick furred grizzly bears which inhabit way up north in the tundras or barren lands, they are smaller thanks to harsher weather, longer hibernation and a lesser amount of food. They are classified separately from grizzly bears and brown bears in SCI. Besides the Barren ground grizzly bears all the others are classified in SCI as simply "interior grizzly" but here are the terms explained. Coastal grizzly: Grizzly bears that inhabit near the coastal areas were feed is more abundant in british columbia, this are not brown bears as brown bears are restricted to the coastal area of alaska, however I believe this tend to be the biggest grizzly bears thanks to the supply of food and weather. Inland Grizzly: This is the basic name in which the grizzly bear is classified in SCI but I have usually heard this term when attempting to differentiate the big coastal bears of alaska (brown bears) from the smaller bears of inland alaska (grizzly bears). Mountain Grizzly: These are common grizzly bears like the rest but the term usually comes applied to the ones that inhabit mountainous terrain and are usually shot on sheep or goat hunts in the yukon or british columbia or alaska. This is what I know and what I have been told.

Simple with few words, the above is correct, the glacier is a color phase of black bear...all the others are brown/grizzly with "where they live" determining their fancy name..food/habitat..simple

So transplanting each to the others appropriate area at birth would still make one or the other grow to 600ish lbs / 1200ish lbs? I've never been to Alaska but this is very interesting. I've seen the coastal brown bears are huge...but my local gun store has a full body mount grizzly that looks pretty small in comparison. "Let me start off with two words: Made in America"
