My friend and I drew tags for SW Afognak and Raspberry Island, which are northwest of Kodiak. We had planned on taking a week to go bear hunting, but after a couple other obligations got in the way we ended up with 3 days to hunt. Lucky for us the weather was great and we took off Thursday morning. We made it to the hunting area around 11 and started spotting bears right away. This one needed a closer look, but got away from us.

This one was too small

How about this one? Nope too small again.

There's one on the beach.

Hey, there's another one on the beach.

Hey is that one? Nope just an elk.

Another one not just right.

Another one passed on.

Maybe we should think about dinner. Mmm King salmon on the grill (ok it was small, but tasted damned good).

Well I guess someone should shoot a bear. This one wasn't the biggest we'd seen, but looked big enough to me. The 338 with 250 gr partitions worked with 2 through the lungs and heart and one in the back end. The 40 foot drop to the beach also helped end the matter.

The biologist aged her at 18-20 and maybe as old as 22. A good bear to take out of the population, since she's probably done having cubs.

The decapitation tools

Nice white hooks anyway.

Should make a nice rug.

So we spotted 16 bears in 2 and a half days, none were cubs. We got up on about 9 of them and did blow a stalk on a nice chocolate bear in the 9 foot range. Also had a chocolate in the 9.5 foot range get past us. This one squares out a little over 8.5'. I wanted one in the 9' range, but I'm happy with it. My buddy passed on a number of bears because he already has an 8 footer on his wall and is looking for one in the 9.5+ foot range. Maybe next year.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

That is a very nice bear ...., Very pretty ,, . Plenty big too . You just added 6 or more deer to the falls population , maybe more ...... People spend too much time trying to get 1 great big bear ... They ought to just get a nice bear every chance they get .. Way to Go ..... thumb clap salute..

. If people would hunt and take more bears they would get to be better bear hunters and have the skill to connect when they do find a monster .............. Bear guides don,t get their skills and abilities by reading about it ...

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

First brown bear. We can only take one every 4 years here on the island so it will be a while before I can get a better one. Maybe I'll have to look into getting a muskox now. Wink

TB,

That's an excellent report, one of the very best I've seen. Whoever did the photography sure knew his job as the pix are just outstanding.
And, Kudos to you for presenting it, and most of all, for the excellent Sow you shot. You took the time to look at a whole lot of Bears before making the decision to shoot the one you did shoot.. That's a story book hunt, one that would make it into any hunting magazine. Everything was PERFECT!!!

Thank you for taking the time to share the hunt with us guys!!! thumb thumb

Fantastic! Congrats on a 1 in 4 hunt. Very nice bear. I can't wait to get back up to hunt Grizzly over north of Nome again. If you draw your Muskox, give Brian Simpson in Fairbanks a call. He guides for Muskox north of Nome and had a dandy of an area for bears and Moose too. We saw Muskox daily and even woke up with about 20 of them nearly 100 yds from camp. The hard part, as you know, is drawing the tag.

DIY, It was just my friend and I on his boat. I live in Kodiak so the entire trip cost me about $300.
