First happy Easter to all AR and readers.

We are planning to be in Anchorage next May 2018 - likely first week - and the idea is to then tag on a 5-7 day hunting trip .... Thinking black bear.

Have no Alaska knowledge and would be first bear hunt!

Any suggestions / recommendations / experiences you can share ?

Thanks,

Charlie

Charlie; Lots of black bear up here in many places. Not exactly sure where to reccomend concentrating on . Where are you planning on traveling up here ?

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

Just to be 100% clear....

If you are a US citizen you may hunt black bear on your own.

If you are not a US citizen you are required by law to have a guide. If that's the case you will need to buy a guided hunt. I would expect it to cost in the $3,000 to $8,000 ball park depending on the hunt details.

May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Baited hunts will probably be on the cheaper side for any guided hunts. I can recommend this guy for a baited hunt. He also gets a lot of color phase bears and you can hunt up to 3 on a trophy fee basis for 2 and 3.

Here's an example of a deluxe boat based hunt for monster bears in Southeast. Not sure what it costs, but it will be on the high side of black bear hunting.

Guys,

I think with a little research you can find boat based black bear hunts offering superb hunting with great to down right luxurious accommodation in the $7,500-$9,000 range.

I'm sure there are folks in New Zealand that wonder why we pay so much for a Stag. Some folks want to experience a hunt they have no chance to do in their homeland. I also think the timing of May for the travel limits quarry choices quite a bit so Black Bear is logical.

.

Nothway, I am hunting springbok in RSA in July at Rand 250/- buck. That's about USD 25/-

I wouldn't dream of paying USD 500/- for a Springbok, but a lot of people do! No necessarily crazy but rather what it is worth to them to hunt one.

A black bear is not on my doorstep and it will cost us to hunt one / two. Guess that's part of international hunting!

Plus the fact you will already be here for other reasons and the flight costs money. Makes sense to maximize the experience while here.

Cheers

True! I guess since I have them all over, I just couldn't see spending that much $$ to hunt them. I need to keep it in perspective to what I can hunt and what I want to hunt!

While I would rather go to SE and hunt the big ones, this guy is posting some affordable trips on the interior. http://texashuntingforum.com/f...u_and_bl#Post6733894
