You can really tell that oil revenues are down.

And they can take it completely but they better start cutting government and take that dividend before considering a state income tax on those of us actually producing.

Phil oh ya I was excited to write more checks to BGCSB...part that chaps me is transporters can put multiple clients on one report for their 50 bucks and we have to pay for each separately. It'd be one thing if we could up our rates to compensate but now with higher tag fees that's gonna get ugly.

And they added a "surcharge" for intensive management (i.e., wolf and bear reduction programs)--$10 for resident hunting, $30 for non-resident hunting.

Note that the non-resident wolf tag is now $60--a small fraction of most other species. I guess wolves are no longer a trophy animal?

Is it to raise cash, or lower hunter participation? Cost can be as much a throttle on hunting pressure as tag allocation. I often hear it is to raise cash, but the actual revenues are usually small.

Jake shot me a text about this so it wasn't a surprise on my hunt with him next fall. I relied "gotta pay to play". However, I didn't mention how much his tip just suffered. Hehehe.

This cuts into the contingency fund, but I'm still going hunting.

Fish & Game gave a talk at the AK chapter of wild sheep foundation recently. He had said prices were going up and they had not been raised for a very long time.

I've been buying hunting licenses here in AK since 1985. I think it was the same then as in 2015. Now at 60, it's free. And Frostbit, in a couple of years when he hits 90, they will give him money back.

It seems everyone in the state agrees something has to be done to the budget, as long as it is not something that affects that someone. First, let's can the dividend. It will save billions, end a complex government system to had it out, and drive out the low life who wants this and that free from the government. Then, we can sit tight and make due until a war in the Middle East drives oil to 150$ a barrel.

I only have to buy a Brown bear tag (don't do musk ox) all others are free harvest tags.
Also it used to be a Yukon Res. paid AK res license prices to hunt here?
Have a good one!

Folks these fees haven't been raise in forever. This was long overdue. I think if you look at lower 48 moose, sheep, and goat tags you will find Alaska is still cheaper. You're welcome to look around at lower 48 caribou, brown bear, and musk ox tag prices and tell me how Alaska compares on those.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

I'll be happy to pay it. Alaska is one of my favorite places on earth and it is still a great deal. I don't understand though why it is so damn hard for states to index things like this to inflation each year rather than slam people at one time. Over the years I've seen the exact same scenario with driver's licenses, car tags, building permits, etc. And the excuse is always "we haven't raised them in forever so now it is double or triple."

Regards,

Don

I will gladly pay more than we do to continue hunting and fishing in Alaska.

I disagree on the idea of giving up part or all of the dividend to fix our fiscal problems. Not because I need or even want it but because allowing the legislature to tap it will only serve to delay them in fixing the real problems of government.

I would rather see them do what needs to be done now to solve the problems than to let them kick this fiscal can down the road so our children and grandchildren will be forced to deal with it once they have depleted the PFD.

The solution is simple. You either cut costs, increase revenues or use a combination of both. Somebody in government has to have the stones to start making the tough decisions. That's their job.
