I just booked my first hunt in Alaska. I am really looking forward to it.

After the hassles of traveling to Africa this should be much more relaxing. No customs, no requests for beer money, no weird regulations like counting your cartridges etc.

Welcome! It'll be great to have you!
I hope you'll be prepared for weather, bugs, logistical problems and odd circumstances.
This week a bunch of folks showed up here in Bristol Bay with no luggage. They were clearly worried and my advise to them was to roll with it, their guides and outfitters will take care of them.
IMO, a typical occurance. I'd guess your guides will work hard to make your trip enjoyable, but be prepared for some stuff beyond their control

Fly Alaska Airlines if you can. They’re the only commercial carrier I’ve flown that hasn’t lost my luggage.

Plan an extra day or two on both ends. There are some great places to eat in Anchorage plus a little sightseeing too.

You’re gonna be in great hands on your hunt. Enjoy!

Thanks!

I have an entire year to plan and anticipate. Breaking the news to my wife was the hardest part and that turned out well.

Some of the most fun and challenging hunting I've done. Just a great place.

If you are there during salmon season, for any of the salmon species, go fishing. Or catch a halibut boat. If nothing else, head to the Kenai for some trout fishing. I wore my arm out catching big rainbows. If you are already there, go fishing too.

Have fun and good luck.

Again thanks. I will be there in June of next year. Fly into Anchorage and depending on how the hunt goes I will have a few days to play tourist.

Would be nice to catch one of those giant halibut.

rotflmo Hey, I've had 15 safaris to Africa and loved every one of them. However, Alaska-WOW! I have loved all of my 5 trips there and getting ready to come up for almost a month in July-going to do some serious fishing again! You will NOT be disappointed!

I just re-read your original post and your statement that "no requests for beer money"
Is a big clue

I am hunting for grizzly with Jake Jefferson.

Although Jake runs a “no alcohol in camp” operation, my comment about beer money come from my first trip through Jo’berg when the airport guy checking my rifle hit me up for “beer money”. I think I gave him 7 rand.

When are you going? I'm looking forward to next year with Jake. Don't shoot my bear if you hunt before me. :-)

It’s a June hunt and if I see a bear with your tag on it, I promise not to shoot it.

But if I do, I will apologize.

Good luck.

Actually this reminds me of a story.

Two years ago I was hunting blackies over bait in Maine.

Thursday afternoon a fair-sized bear came in and was feeding with his head in the bucket. I was fooling around trying to videotape him and wound up spooking him.

Rather then shoot him rather far back in the spine and risk wounding him, I let him move out.

Friday I was in the same stand but nothing showed.

I was leaving Saturday morning and recommended the stand to a friend who hadn’t seen anything in 5 days of hunting on two different stands.

I knew the bear didn’t act that spooked when he left Thursday and might be back.

My friend went with my suggestion and got his bear that afternoon.

He had a full body mount and it looks just like the bear I have on video.

I was tickled pink he got that bear.

Ha! Good luck and have a great hunt. Look forward to your pics. I'll be headed out about 3 months later. Over a year to go, but really looking forward to it, Jake!

If you go thru some old hunting threads you will see Jake has some nice bears harvested over the years. I have not hunted with him but I have read a bunch of good things about him.
Please post when you finish.
Have a great time.

Thanks. And I know I will have a great time. Hunting is all about the experience and the people you share it with.

I will certainly give a hunting report.
