Well, the time is getting near. I am 20 days from leaving. I have started getting my things together. I have been looking at the weather at both Arctic Village & Dead Horse. I am a bit surprised how cold it is. It is hotter than hell here. I might suffer. I saw some mosquito pics from Dead Horse. OMG! It was insane. I have managed to get an injury. I have had something similar before. It is near my scapula on my right shoulder. I probably made it worse with my own stupidity. It was aggravated a little. I lifted HARD last Wednesday. I didn't feel it at all. I came home and loaded the pack up to 67 pounds. It started hurting but I continued on. BIG mistake. I have gone to physical therapy. I am going to see a specialist tomorrow. I have not touched the pack since. I have a super light Rifles, Inc 300 Win MAG. I thought has crossed my mind to take a heavier rifle. I can't make up my mind. The heavier rifle is easier to shoot at long range. But it is heavier and this is a backpack hunt. I have thought through everything. Generally, I am going VERY light. I am taking 2 things which might be criticized. One is a heavy duty poncho that weighs about a pound. I can see it coming in handy in a variety of circumstances. I also have an extremely light weight short set of tripod shooting sticks. I am going to bring them. Honestly, in my last 2 sheep hunts, the guides were full of shit about not needing sticks, bipod etc. I wish I had them both times. I am excited. I can't wait. I hope the injury gets better. Fortunately, I have to travel most of next week which largely takes the pack out of the equation. My wife (a hand surgeon) thinks it is muscular which is probably the best answer. Going to have it checked regardless. Thanks for everyone's advice. | ||

Larry take it easy, like a boxer training for a fight, you need to back off rest and heal. Remember this is fun! I'm sure you'll have a great hunt. Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness" | |||

------------------------------------------------- Best of luck to you, hope you have a great trip. As to Deadhorse, it has been hotter than hell there. They are reporting 58 as I type this and had been the high 60's and 70's when I left there a few days ago. When in the mid 50's and sun is out, it is hot there! Sweating hot. Definitely a stellar crop of mosquitoes and other biting bugs though, as normal. And one does want a breeze, those windless days suck in the summer. Again, best of luck on the hunt. Enjoy !! | |||

Don't sweat the extra weight on the poncho. I carry a Noah's tarp that's 12'x12' and use it all the time. No rain? And I need shade, set it up. Raining? Set it up. Camp Needs cover for gear and meat? Set it up. Siwash and no sleeping bag? Roll up in it! Super handy. Would rather skip my tent than skip my tarp. It's a shade over a pound. I still carry rain gear. | |||

Great. I am flying out of there. That will be an interesting portion of the trip for me as my wife and I love "Life below Zero." I just saw the next 5 days for Dead Horse and Arctic Village. They are showing in the 30's at night. My bug jacket might be a good addition. | |||

Everyone reacts to them differently, but my shoulder's tendonitis reacted best to an old NSAID, called Meclomen, generic meclophenamate sodium (I think, from memory). Meclomen AFAIK is no longer made, but you might try the generic. Only downside, besides those of all NSAIDs, is that you have to take it 3 times a day, not once like most of the newer ones. Very cheap, you might try it, prescription needed. I found it to have little or none of the stomach problems some of them produce, but I have a pretty tough stomach. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. Producers said sue is the one person they don't have to push to get them to talk. She never shuts up! Glenn wants the cameras running non stop. That dog mushing dude is a pothead and they sit around all day waiting for him to do stuff and smoke his weed. Chip and Agnes are about as close to real as your gonna get. Chip told them to shove off, he's doing what he does and they can film if they want to! Anyway.....lol | |||

I've never seen an ugly PT. Unfortunately the last one I used was male and he ended up hunting Moose with Joyce during my rehab. I got home late last night from the airport. I watched a show or two that I had DVR'ed. I noticed that Erik Salitan (of Life Below Zero fame) took Boddington & his wife sheep hunting. I had to watch that . Well, neither got sheep. To be fair, the weather was a major factor and the Mrs. got sick and had to be taken out. | |||

"Well, neither got sheep. To be fair, the weather was a major factor and the Mrs. got sick and had to be taken out.[/QUOTE] Sheep-tag soup is the toughest of all soups to choke down but we all take our turn at dining on it! I've been so hell-bent dedicated to the sport (albeit more limited than some guys) because of the cuisine of my first sheep hunt in 1980 where my wife failed on a desert sheep hunt. We were gone for 20+ days and we never saw a legal ram! Ouch! I've more than made up for that first failed attempt! Have a wonderful adventure, Larry! May your legs be strong and your shot be true. I think I am down to 11 days. My back is no better. We had a different orthopedic surgeon up for the weekend to shoot some hogs and fish a little. He thought about the same as the others except when I had pain going over rough places in the jeep. That gave him some concerns. I am having an MRI this week. I have managed to get the cold from hell as well. I have spoken to Riley. I am going one way or another. I may hire another packer. It sucks after training for almost a year. It what it is. It may turn out for the best. I may take a different gun instead of an ultralight gun. This will no doubt be better at long range. | |||
|

You've still got time to heal!!!! The option of hiring a packer is a great fall back position in case your still sore. As to the rifle, I've also got a rifles inc in 300 RUM with a Swarovski 3-18 on it. It's the sweetest and easiest rifle to shoot at long range period. You can't go past them IMO. Good luck Larry Cheers Nick | |||

I hope you are fully healed upon departure and that you have a great hunt. You certainly did your part in preparing for the hunt. I took a nice brown bear in South Central Alaska in late May and I plan to hunt Alaska as often as possible. It's a lot closer than Zim, but still no elephant. Enjoy the beauty and opportunity. I look forward to hearing about it on your return. | |||

Thanks all. I am getting an MRI on Wednesday. That will mark 2 weeks since I carried a pack or lifted weights. Multiple doctors think it is the intercostal (spelling?) muscles. It will take 4-6 weeks to heal. They want to make sure. The doc that hunted hogs with me over the weekend is concerned because I had pain when going over rough areas while riding in the jeep. I now have strep throat. How lucky can I be? I have told Riley to get an extra packer. I have a new pack coming that weighs half the old one. Not much else I can do. It is what it is. As long as I can walk, I am going . | |||

I just has the MRI. Before I could get back to the office, they were calling with the results. It is soft tissue, that is good news. They want me to do no lifting or training with the pack prior to the trip, that is bad news. I will have 3 weeks of cardio only. I guess it could be worse. | |||

Larry, You'll probably not lose everything you've gained although what you're going through is far from ideal. I still hold out high-hope for a successful report from you. Zeke | |||

I think I will be fine. I have still done a lot of cardio. The hell of it is that I have had this injury before. It is golf related. Then one day of stupidity wreaked havoc. It sucks but it is what it is. I was going to back off next week anyway. It is forcing me to re-think things. For example, should I take my Stone Glacier pack? That saves 4 pounds and is roughly the same size. I was considering taking my old reliable Browning A- Bolt in 300 Win Mag. It shoots insanely well but it is heavier. The recommended 4 pounds of "snacks" from home are 100% gone. and on and on and on....... | |||

I'm ALWAYS happy that I shaved off every single little ounce once I get backpacking! Let that be your guide and you can thank me later! haha I have a friend leaving Monday for NWT and since I cannot help guide desert sheep this year because I have a great deer tag at the same time, I have to live "sheep hunting" through you and others. I guess that's why I've tried to insert myself. just a little, into your adventure. You'll be fine but you'll still question your sanity about half way through a really tough day! I've seen guys throw their hat on the ground and sit down and exclaim that they were done. None of them sat their and died so I guess it all turn out fine (I've done that a couple times too). Story time: I was on a steep mountain, having a melt-down and fearing falling to my sudden and sure death and said I could go no farther. The guide was shocked and perplexed but my brother knew I just needed to eat something. I did, the trail came into perspective and seemed to flatten in all the right spots, it was fine and we went on to take 2 excellent Dall sheep about 9 day later. Go at YOUR pace, take a breather when you need it, keep food handy, drink plent and often and don't blow a cork. Man, I wish I was sheep hunting this year! Zeke | |||
