Guides for a combination hunt

Posters,

I plan to ritire in fall of 2010 and will celebrate by going on a hunting trip to Alaska. I hunted near Manley Hot Springs in 2000 and got a nice +60" moose.

I'd like to hunt brown/grizzly and either moose or caribou. Since 2010 is an even year, the Peninsula , Kodiak, ect. are closed 'till fall.

Could you folks reccommend guides for this sort of hunt?

Here's my information: I'll be hunting with my son, I'm healthty but slowing down, he's very fit. We'll be looking for a quality, fair-chase hunt with good, mature trophies (We're not really trophy hunters). We're not picky about camps and/or food but expect at least rudimentary accomadation.

I've sent for information to severeal guides but don't really have a way of separating the good from bad. If you've had a bad experiance with a guide I'd appreciate hearing from you too.

Please help, thanks.

I suppose others have asked this question so I'd appreciate directions to ld posts too.

These folks hunt the animals you are after and can do combo hunts and accomodate multiply hunters. Sheep season is just around the corner, so if you don't talk to them in the next few days, it may be a while before you hear from them. These are some of the few people whom I give a totally unqualified endorsement. Feel free to PM if you have specific questions.

Thanks, Marc, that's the sort of endorsement I look for. I've sent for additional info. Look good.

Marabou, I've sent for info. from NW Outfitters too. They look good too. Have you hunted with these folks?

Um, I think Slasher IS nwa. From what I've seen the only thing the Slasher has to offer to the forum is self-promotion. Too bad. And BS to boot!
Grizzly, you have a lot of time so gather as much info as you can. Talk to folks who have hunted with the guides you're looking at who didn't kill anything. Ask questions about guides here and other forums.

Wow you guys always looking to cause a problem. For your info I am not NWA. I Hunted with them in 98-2000. I do guide for them now but do recommend them as they have always been stand up people offering great services whether i was involved with them or not. You guys obviously do not have a clue as to what SELF promotion is as if i were going to promote myself i could do so without the accolade of NWA. My own hunting accomplishments are what i coul do that with and i feel sorry for people who need & assume things that simply are not true. If you spent a little less time on this forum and More time in the woods maybe someday you accomplishments as a hunter could rival some of the true hunters on this forum.
Have a great day

M.R.M.M.:

If you took the time to completely and honestly fill out your profile and state you are a guide for that co. then no one will have to assume anything.

Basically, you are plugging your boss' operation and not stating (in your profile) that you have a vested interest in the operation you are plugging. Your boss is doing enough self promotion on here for both of you.

If you spent more time on this board, you would have known that was the right thing to do.

Whether I spend too much time on this board is open for debate, what is not is the # of entries I have in the B & C. and S.C.I. books. There are enough guys on here who have met me in AK. and know of my by talking privately to know whether I or Alasken are for real.

Sorry to be brief, I have to get back to packing for my third 14C sheep hunt. Have a nice weekend and update your profile when you have a chance.

3x 14C!?! Man, don't tease us-show us some pics! I would love to see a thread started showing pics from AK in '07. Sorta like they do on the Outdoorsdirectory board-just pics and no "nice XXX" coments from others to clutter it up.

I'm looking at an outfitter called Alaska Bush Adventures run by Hugh & Ryan Krank. They hunt the Kuskokwim River mostly. They look good but one never really knows much about any guide from thier website/liarature.

Do any readers know anything about thier reputation, hunting area or success?

Posters,

I'm sending this post back to the top in hopes of getting a little more help. I'm looking at the following guides/outfitters and would really like your opinons, good and bad.

Tony Lee
Jerry Austin
Max Schwab
Matt Snyder (one good mark already)
Hugh & Les Krank
Billy Fitzgerald
George Siavelis
Northern Wildernes Adventures

Again, I'd appreciate your help. This first time I ever booked a guide and I've heard some horror stories.

Thanks,

Grizzly

If your considering a combo hunt for bear and moose/caribou then hunting Kodiak won't work. I would look toward the peninsula for a chance a really big critters. I don't know any of the guides you listed but a search over the internet will help you immensely. Also, contact them and tell them you want references. I have heard of a few of those guides and know a little bit about their operations so I think you've chosen a few good ones. Good luck in your search.

G.A. it would be helpful to know exactly what animal you wanted to hunt with each outfitter. Diff' guys have diff' specialties.

George Siavalis is top notch for moose. Consistently produces big moose and a proven track record.

Matt snyder, top notch for sheep hunting in Tok mgt. area.

Jerry austin, a good choice for big bear.

Note: I have not hunted with any of the above 3 guys. I have spoken with all of them by phone and have researched their background extensively.

G.A.,

If you are looking at the Kuskokwim area. check out Renfro's Alaskan Adventure. I came very close to using them for my hunt. I have heard very good things about them from other hunters (met two guys at the Anchorage airport who had just used them on DIY caribou hunt and they were satisfied). They are at the top of my list if I ever decide to go on a bear hunt.

If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.

Motor City:

As said above,

George Siavalis is top notch and top price as well. You get what you pay for, including his long established track record for success on large moose.

Do you ant a trophy hunt/mooose, or just a regular hunt?

I know of two smaller moose operations. One takes 6 hunters per year the other two. Both have a pefect 100% success rate. They are sold out year after year by word of mouth only. I send two guys from this board to them and both scored. They also cost much less. P.M. me if that works better for you.

I will be hunting with one of those operations for grizzly right after they are done with the moose this year.

Good hunting.

no to Fitzegarald, Lee and Krank, i've heard bad things from other guides/clients about these outfits, so thats a personal no from me. but everyones experience is different.
heard good things about Siavalis and Austin though. Another options i'd look at is Lonesome Dove Outfitters down outa cordova, i've guided for a him and was blown away by the moose numbers down there, his cub pilot picked up over 2000lbs in sheds last year, bears out the...well lots of bears and moose numbers were great. Sam Fejes is another place i'd check, unit 6 gets overlooked ALOT for moose i think.

Lance Kronberger would be a good choice for this kind of a hunt. If you wanted to go with a more traditional outfitter. Ralph Miller at Deltana would also be a good bet, although not cheap.

Thanks very much. He is 39", not 40" so the search will continue. I did not draw any ak. permits for goat or sheep for 2008. There is always next year.

Good Hunting.

Griz,
I can hunt you in the northern most concession of the Brooks range where we have a an exclusive concession...We have awesome Grizzley and lots of them and plenty of Caribou, also Dall Sheep..I am booked for 2008 but could get you in 2009 or 2010.. Those far north Grizzly are as big as many of the Brown Bear, in fact its hard to tell the difference IMO.

Thanks to all. After a lot of thought and research, I just retained Max Schwab. He has a good reputation with everyone I called and seems to run a good, sensible hunt.

I'll send in a report, thanks again.
