Alaska to raise hunting licenses and Tags

My hunting/fishing fees as a resident in Colorado in 2001 were higher than the proposed fee changes Alaska might implement in the future. It is a business like any other with it's operating expenses, I believe Alaskans and non-residents alike have faired well with hunting and fishing fees over the years in comparison to the lower 48. A good bang for the buck. I'm amazed the fees have stayed this low over the past decade.

My first AK hunt was in 2000 and the fees have not changed till now if it gets passed...not bad in my book however smaller more frequent increases are easier to deal with than big jump in fees

I think the hunting and fishing fees and permits are an insignifiant part of the whole experience. If I could draw a hunting permit a little more reguraly than every eight to ten years, I would not mind if the fees doubled, or more. Impossible to draw a decent permit in my home state anymore.

I get where you are coming from here but not in all cases. Of course if someone is coming on a $15,000 guided brown bear hunt the difference between a $500 and a $750 tag is nothing.

But if someone like me is a non resident who is working seasonally in AK who just wants to fish or maybe whack a deer on their days off it is steeper. I see both the state and the fed enforcement officers flying float planes all around Kodiak checking licenses, permits, and coolers spending thousands of dollars when everybody knows all the float planes have to land at the Trident basin when they come into town. They could just wait down at the dock and check everyone for free? And don't get me started on the thousands spent to fly stream surveys.

What I'd rather see is a state income tax,,sure the residents would have to suckit up but the revenue from the seasonal ai,, commercial fisherman,sportfish guides,tour guide,park service temps,SLOPERS, would far surpass the pitance from increased resident tags which will throw the rural Alaska into an enforcement hate zone.

Just sent a check to Colorado for $384 in an attempt to draw a Pronghorn. Joyce's last year yielded about 35# of meat. Tasty but expensive.

I think Alaska's fees are ridiculously cheap compared to most of the lower 48.

That said, Joyce and I are now "old geezers" (cue wisecrack from Brett) and hunt here for free except for our permit draw "donations".

I'm all for raising fees if there is a need but in my case I'm going to save the black bear tag $$ and apply it to the sheep tag so the fee increase for me is a wash. Plenty of bear here in NC.

Those flood gates get opened and we might as well move to Canada. !!!!
Tho this current system has it's problems I would rather pay thru the nose for a hunting license or have fewer state supplied services than have an income tax.
