Major changes in the 2025-2026 hunting regulations

As the 2025-2026 hunting season starts, the state of Alaska has adopted some major changes to its hunting and trapping guidelines, including bag limits, hunting unit boundary shifts and hunter education requirements. The revisions are approved by the Alaska Board of Game.

Hunter education

As of July 1, all nonresident moose hunters must complete a nonresident moose hunting orientation course before hunting.


All goat hunters must complete a mountain goat identification quiz before hunting to better identify the type of goats they are authorized to take.

Starting July 2026, all sheep hunters must complete a state-approved hunter orientation course for sheep hunting in any Aug. 10-Sept. 10 general harvest ticket hunt. Bag limits for those hunts are one ram with a full-curl horn or larger.

Brown bear hunting

The hunting season for brown bears in Units 9D, 9E, and RB368 has been lengthened for both residential and nonresidential hunters.

In Unit 13, brown bear bag limits have increased to two bears every regulatory year.

In Units 14A, 14B and 17, the season has been lengthened.

Caribou

The caribou hunting season in Unit 9D has been lengthened.

Sheep

Statewide, the dates have been extended to Aug. 1-Sept. 20 that prohibit the use of aircraft to locate sheep or direct hunters to sheep.

Unit 19C has been closed to the residential general season.

Wolverine


The hunting season in Unit 9 has been shortened.

Fur animals

In Unit 10, Pribilof Islands, there is a shortened season and reduced nonresident bag limit for the Arctic fox.

Bison hunting

Bison hunting has been added to the list for proxy hunting for the elderly and the disabled.

Small game

Alaska has closed the season for Alaska hares in Units 9 and 17.

The state has shortened the ptarmigan season in Unit 13B to August 20-February 15.

Game management units/areas

The boundaries of Units 25C and 25D have been changed to the Steese Highway between Milepost 147 and Circle.

Unit 20E, the Ladue River controlled use area, is defined as the beginning and end of the Nine Mile Trail.

Other changes

A transfer of possession form can be captured digitally to streamline the process. Transfer of Possession forms are required for gifting, donating or temporarily third-party transport of unprocessed meat.

Forms are located in the back of the hunter guide or can be created by hunters.

I do not think the sheep course is available yet as it does not go into effect until 2026.

Remember, a nonresident is required to have a guide on a sheep or mountain goat hunt. So now an online tutorial and quiz will make all nimrods experts instead of relying on their guides. Government at work.
