That's not a hill more like a bump. Wink

A good 5 to 10 story building might be better take the steps.

Watch out for the gators.

The problem is that I get up at 5. I exercise for 2-3 hours. Then I go to the office. I get home at 9-10 at night. Little time to go elsewhere.

What with the highest point in Florida being but 312 feet above sea level, you have to take what you can get.
Highest here in Oregon is 11,239 -- as long as Mount Hood doesn't erupt.

Now that made me laugh. On our drive to the lower 48 last year we stopped and took a picture of one because we couldn't believe someone actually put a chair lift on that hill.

I had to stop and catch my breath from just looking at that hill!

I feel your pain, Larry, but you'll feel it even more if you don't find a better test than that speed-bump.

Just razzin' ya a little. You'll be ready and have a fabulous adventure!

If you had a series of those hills you could walk one-to-the other in series. But even walking up one side and down the other from multiple angles with some level walking in between will be beneficial. Another good option is going up and down the steps of a stadium. Even a couple of times a week will make a difference.

I'm lucky enough to live where a stroll to the mailbox is a rolling up and down 3/4 mile trip each way with an elevation difference of about 350' from highest point to lowest point along the way.

When you are working the hours I am working,it is virtually impossible to go somewhere else to train. I have no time. For example, yesterday I got up at 5AM. I exercised. Got a shower and headed to the office. I got home after 10 PM from the office. Plus, these days, especially around here, it is awfully tough getting into places like stadiums.

If you want to hear something really funny, this hill is at least 4 times the size of the one I was training on. Maybe more.

It is what it is. I guess the best thing is to do what the cross fit guys might do, put some weight on your back and sprint up the hill, walk back down, sprint back up, rinse, repeat.

Go low impact, i.e. there is always at least one foot on the ground. An inclined treadmill is a better option than running with weight.

More like put on the 20 pound weight vest, run up that bump and do twenty burpees at the top. Run down and do 30 air squats. 15 rounds for time two days a week as a gauge of cardio vascular improvement. The other days of the week walk with your pack and the gear you are actually taking. Use a metal pipe to simulate the rifles weight so you don't worry the neighbors.

Stadium or building stairs with the pack on would be excellent at least one day a week.

As Dave said, it is what it is, you have to improvise.

Thanks gentlemen.

I do have a treadmill that goes up to 30 degrees. I get a day or two a week with it.

As I said before, I am too busy (at least through 6/30) to make a trek to find stairs. Life is insane right now.

These days, it is difficult to get into anywhere such as a stadium or a building to climb the stairs especially carrying a backpack. Given today's security issues, this is frowned upon.

At 39 days before leaving, I am not going to introduce anything new, especially cross-fit. I do not want to get injured. I might step up the volume. I might step up the intensity. Nothing new.

I have probably run 150,000 miles in my life. I went to college on a track scholarship. I have serious knee problems which, fortunately, are not giving me too much grief right now. My left knee is the best. Both the lateral & the medial meniscus are shredded. They cannot be repaired. The right is far worse. Again, both lateral & medial meniscus are shredded beyond repair. The right has other problems. Often the right knee gets a lot of fluid on it. It blows up big. I am told that I am going to have to have a total knee replacement on the right. I want to hold off on that as long as I can.

The reality is that I am happy with this hill. While it is not a mountain, it is a hell of a lot better than what I have climbed for my last 2 trips. I am pretty happy with my conditioning.

On the plus side:

1- At age 60, I am lifting more weights than I ever have.

2- On normal days, I am about 12 pounds heavier in the back pack than I have been training for my last 2 trips. Keep in mind that this is 12 pounds more on a MUCH larger hill.

3- On my long days, I am going a half hour longer with 22 pounds MORE in the backpack than I used in my prior training for the prior 2 trips.

On the negative side:

1- I have not used my Hypoxico machine to help with the altitude. It wrecked my blood pressure last time.

2- I live at about 50 feet above sea level.

3- I will be 3 months shy of 61 when I go.

4- I have unexplained weight gain. A lot of weight. This was in spite of exercising 2-4 hours a day while eating 1700-2000 calories a day.

I have been to Mayo clinic for 4 days of testing. I am going to a specialist here. They have diagnosed a problem. I have lost about 20 pounds. Unfortunately, I am still at a weight that I thought I could never get to under any circumstance. I am hopeful that I lose at least 10 pounds more before I go.

Thanks all!

I read the thread before looking at "the hill"!

Holland is pretty flat but has one or two bigger hills than that !

Either way I think what you are doing is totally cool and I look forward to a great report and pictures !

One day I may seek out a hill too ....

Both of my knees have very little cartilage in them, been that way most of my life. I have found that bicycling has offered the least impact while maximizing cardio. The great thing about cycling is that you dont even need hills, just down shift if you want more resistance.

Larry,

Cut out all carbs and fat in your diet..

No fruit, no sugar, no starches of any kind (rice, potatoes, pasta, bread etc,) no alcohol. No peas, no corn, no tomatoes. No artificial sweeteners.

64 oz water a day.

You will drop the last 10 you are looking for.

I live on egg whites, lean meat, and vegetables.

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Heres my old bodybuilder diet from my glory days. My x-girlfriend was a body builder and she wanted a churchy dude, so she kicked my ass and got me from military in shape to body builder big.

Brekkie:
4 eggs
half cup dry oat meal (for your brains)
one large piece of fruit (the size of your hand)

9-10 am snack
4 oz protein (nuts, jerky, whole muscle lunch meat)
piece of fruit the size of your fist.

1200 am lunch
6 oz protein (lean chicken, beef, fish doesn't matter
1 fist sized fruit
1 cup tomatos and cucumbers

1400 snack
same as first snack

1700 dinner
same as lunch

Rules:
No pop/soda, candy, cookies, bread, starches (bananas, potatoes), booze.

Drink all the water, black tea, black coffee you can. Salsa and mustard are fine, it is better if you make the salsa than buy it, that way you don't end up with one full of carbs.

Cheat day every 14 days where you can eat 1000 calories of whatever junk you want.

Lift weights, get on the rowing machine, ride the bike, run (if you can), walk briskly, swim.

You just need to come out to CO for a week or so, before you go sheep hunting (If you had the time of course) You are welcome to come stay here anytime!

My average hike here Larry is 5 miles (twice per week) going from 5,300 ft to 6,700 feet in elevation. And once a week (Sunday morning) we do one that is 9.5 miles at 7,000 - 8,500 feet. Every Tuesday morning - I do a 15 mile bike ride, also with a few good hills. All of this is within 30 minutes of my house which is nice. After my heart attack I only lift 4 days per week now (45 minutes per day) but no doubt it continues to help.

Its a huge advantage for those of us that live in the west, and can train at elevation. When I go to Alaska/Canada, most of the mountains there are lower than what I am normally training on here.

Lots of luck Larry, I am sure Riley will take good care of you pal.

I look forward to seeing you on the 6th.
Getting old is tough, I know, but perhaps the diet and exercise program of a great elephant hunter, Sutherland, would be of use to you:

AM
cocoa with boiled milk and vanilla
exercise with dumb bells
cold bath
rub down
tea and biscuits

off hunting
sugar and cocoa mixture
water

PM
2nd bath (two per day, cold, to strengthen the heart)
change clothes
eat
whiskey
tobacco--to steady the nerves

Cal

PS.
Don't wait on the knee replacement. I've had both knees done. Two months after the last one I walked six miles with my Lab and do so every day, rain or shine, warm or cold, and have done so for ten years. When it is done, you will ask yourself why you waited so long.
