As usual I got ZERO. Joyce did draw DM413 so looks like we have a good shot at a freezer filler.

Cheers

Those antlerless tags are great tags, my daughter had DM400 but we saw a legal bull and took it instead, lots of cows to look over, however some will have calves. We saw a good number of lone cows too, but buy the time we got the rifle out to shoot they were gone....smart and fast buggers for sure.

Congrats Joyce !!!!!

I scored. DM 400, DC 480 and DG 338. I almost never get drawn. Think I'll buy some lottery tickets.

It has personally been a big zero for me the past few years but my wife and kids seem to always get a few. Wife drew Spring '16' BB on Afognak, this fall son Derek drew goat on south road system on Kodiak and my daughter drew a cow elk tag on Afognak this year, dad is going to packing and hunting vicariously through other members of the tribe.

Frostbit,

Any thoughts on how a guy should approach that area. Boat in on the lake or hike in on Crescent Lake Trail and head up to the high country? I can do either. Thanks.

Mart

Hi Mart,

My plan was going to be get a fly over to scope out terrain and Goat locations with accessibly of the Crescent Lake trail from the Sterling Highway side. Unless it looked like the Seward Trail side gave quicker Goat country access.

I was then going to Mountain Bike the trail with a trailer and stash those somewhere off trail and climb to ridge lines and spike out.

Caveat!! - This plan is hatched without much input or personal knowledge to date. I've hiked in there but is was probably 20 years ago.

Good Luck!! Love to hear your progress on scouting.

Cheers

I was considering boating around to Porcupine Island and hiking in from there. Of course I'll do some scouting this spring and summer. I can actually glass some of that area from Snug Harbor road. I think you have a good idea with biking in. I don't have a mountain bike but that trail is not to awful long so I could hike it pretty quickly and head up to where I can camp and glass.

Thanks for the reply.

I think it is 6 miles in from the Sterling side but a gradual elevation gain. I think it is shorter from the Seward side but a steeper initial climb then tapering off. The work would likely begin from there.

The idea of taking the bike and trailer from the Sterling side meant it cut a 6 mile hike without meat out and a 6 mile hike out with the meat.

Saw a guy using a rig like that going into Russian Lake when I was on a Bear hunt hoofing it. I thought, dang, that looks easy.

Cheers
Jim

Drawing permits always come out right before AK SCI Show, I thinks its planned that way...However, It was great to see good friends and talk about hunting adventures, as well it was great to see Jim and Joyce, of course we always see Brett ( current AK SCI president) and when I see Bretts Dall, it always brings back a great memory of that adventure, aside from it, my wife drew a big goose egg on tags this year but she can relish the adventure (at least one of them) as she wakes up in the morning to see her life size ram in the foyer, just wanted to share for those who did not make it to SCI, and I am proud of her for this accomplishment because she always wanted to do it, but she never thought she could pull it off.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

I drew Caribou 481. I actually thought I put in for the unit further east at Eureka. Now Im scrambling to change the game plan. Not much access east of Talkeetna other than by boat or plane.

I wouldn't worry about that. I suspect there will be some Moose coming your way after November.
