I have a Grizzly hunt booked for late September of this year. I’m thinking of only using gear that is pre 1960. And before you ask YES the guide/outfitter is IN. I’m going to cheat a little, my rifle is a ceracoated 416 Rem with a laminate stock, however it is built in a 1909 Argentine. Also I don’t think I’ll replace my Kennetreks. I’m sure the guide will carry his standard rifle also.

My main question is what would be the standard outerwear for say 1955 on that same hunt? I have a mackinaw plad suit but I’m pretty sure it won’t be that cold. We’ll be hunting out of a camp with a cabin.

Anyway being born in 1975 limits my knowledge of 1955 a little, just thought I’d ask the expert old guys on here!

Wool and cotton.

No thanks I hunted when that was what we had.

The new stuff is superior I well not be going back.

Yes! Wool all the way. L.L. Bean boots, heavy rubber rain gear and a pre '64 '06. No no! No modern synthetic/rust proof anything. If your going to suffer you might as well go whole hog. I grew up hunting with all that stuff and you couldn't pay me to go back to it.

It’s kind of an idea we had when he was down here turkey hunting. What if for kicks you limited yourself on some or all of your gear. Obviously technology has made hunting more comfortable and in my opinion easier. I can’t say that’s all bad, however hunting to me isn’t all about being successful in killing what I’m after. Sometimes a little misery adds to the enjoyment and memory of the time spent hunting. If hunting was 100% about the trophy size or if I was relying on the hunt as my source of food for my family I wouldn’t think of such things. I don’t know maybe you need to drink a beer or six before this sounds like a good idea! HA!

I really don’t see the difference of this and traditional archery or traditional muzzleloader hunting.

Uh, yeah toilet paper predates that by a lot. Better to take some.

Wool cloths including army wool gloves, rubber rain gear, leather boots or rubber packs, Maine hunting hat, red of course and a blue steel wood stocked gun shooting nothing fancier than Nosler Partitions. Better would be Rem Corelokts or Winchester PowerPoint's.

Pretty quick you will find that gun wise as long as you wipe it down a little each night it won't melt like some of the stainless/synthetic folks seem to think. Still a great way to go if you take care of it.

Like cheap licenses for the non quarry game and being able to shoot what you like for meat...

One thing I like about hunting in Africa so much is being able to go into game country and shoot what you want within reason.

Alaska kind of did that the last time I was there in that you could buy some types of tags in advance if you wanted to risk it, but now seems to be infected with the lower 48 limited tag drawing crap now...

For me I always thought just going iron sights would be a fun experience for hunting grizzly. Throws a different aspect in there. Or handgunning with iron sights. Wear good clothes, be comfortable, just challenge yourself with maybe more limitations when it comes to shooting capabilities?

Yeah I've run out of toilet paper before a long way from a resupply. The second choice is NO FUN!

I've had a sporterized Remington 1917 Enfield .30-06 with receiver sights done up in the 1930's I would guess. I got it essentially for free as part of a trade. It's been mostly used as a camp gun but I always thought about taking out on a semi serious hunt sometime. It shoots very well within the limit of my 60 plus year old vision.

You may be onto something there.

Now you’re getting the idea!! An iron sights only hunt is on the list to do also!

A few years ago an outdoor writer ( Layne Simpson) did just that, but on a moose hunt. He went with one of the Nosler family: they were able to find some of the original 180 gr. partition bullets for their pre-64 .300 H&H M70s, just like John Nosler used. Used all wool as I remember. Can't remember the scope: probably an older Leupold 4x. All the stuff worked just fine.

Do yourself a treat and order the book "Last of the Great Brown Bear Men." That book details the lives of Bill Pinnell and Morris Talifson, the great brown bear guides on Kodiak Island. It also has a recommended gear list including clothing recommendations. You might be able to find the article by a search: it was in one of the more popular outdoor magazines.

Jake my buddy gave my the idea years ago when you run out of toilet paper. It has literally saved my ASS twice . Extra tall socks and a sharp knife. Just slice what you need off the top of the socks.

It’s funny this thread has turned to wipe paper. For over 20 years I made my living 100% from the back of a horse taking care of cattle. I rode some pretty big pastures, at least for this part of the world, I never packed water or food. However, I never went without a roll of TP!

Win model 71 loaded with 250gr silvertips...or Barnes originals but I'm not sure when those came about...and wool... That would be fun.

I never really planned a hunt like you described but I have done a few... Wool pants and sweater from WWII, a DI hat with an orange ribbon around it to make it legal, because I like a brim and water protection, along with my 1903 Springfield 35 Whelen Peep and Post, 290 grain Cast. I don't think I am alone in that camp because memory tells me that Phil wears military wool pants from whichever army sold them to the surplus store too. I have and have worn German, American, British currently as I found a real deal on light weight wool with Long inseams! I do sneak modern light base layer Army underwear inside them. Very good combo.

But that is not why we are cranky or walk with a limp. Half a century of packing loads equal to, or greater than, your body weight tends to wear thing out

And as for clothing, I have given a majority of the newest clothing an honest try and much of it, like the best goretex rain gear and waders are great but a lot of the older wool gear, especially whipcord pants, are still as good as I have found.
And I guess my back must have been worn in to fit but for heavy loads I still prefer my old Kelly frame packs. And at a feathery 1 1/2 pounds they are lighter, and proven tougher, than the newest carbon fiber wonder packs.

I had a feeling this thread would come around. As a turkey hunt outfitter in Missouri and Ray being an Alaskan guide we had the thought of offering a “vintage” hunt. The perimeters would be set by the client and as guides we would provide them with that hunt. Obviously in a dangerous game situation safety would not be compromised.

I believe that there is a percentage of hunters that are looking for a hunt like they had as a kid or, like in my case, a hunt from a time that they wish they could have experienced. It may not be what “you” are into but I think there are hunters looking for an “adventure” or “experience” that the bulk of the hunting industry isn’t offering.

To do it right the cost of the hunt should be what was charged in the 60's

Well some one ruin a good pair of hunting gloves instead of using the snowball method.

I was out hunting I came a pond a pile and some crap covered gloves.

I pack paper all the time.

Wet wipes go along on most extended trips also.
