Wifey and I both drew a big goose egg. Looks like I'm doing the five mile death march for caribou this year. "...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." My son drew DC485 also. Me, I'll be a tag along as I drew nothing, but most of my requests are for sheep which we all know are usually pretty low % on the draw.

I hedged my bets this year and at least got the Tier 1 caribou for Unit 13. Has anyone used a transporter/fly in service to the herd's core area? I normally hunt off the Denali Highway, but I want better chances and avoid the shit show that's been developing there. I think Cal Pappas used a fly-in last year? I'll look through last years posts to double check. Dave

My wife didn't draw dc485 and she's the only one I know that didn't. I drew that one last year and shot a cow in the non motorized area. I did draw west Ugak bay brown bear on kodiak and archery moose on JBer. Pro Staff for: In Natures Image Taxidermy

Not sure which one you are talking about. There are at least 4 doing it. I'm going with James Whitman. I believe he's been doing it for over 30 years. Friend from Ketchikan drew a unit 13 bou tag. So we can hunt together again this year. I just do the subsistence hunt. I've got (my spot) . Farthest I've had to sled one out is 360 yards. This year a young friend packed one from 373 yards for me. His fault as he didn't want me to throw my bou sled in the truck. The trick to hunting the shit storm is . DON'T GO UP THERE ON THE WEEKENDS !!!! I mostly hunt Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursday. My wife works at The Hub so we know when all the Anchorage and Valley hunters are enmass. The other trick is, find a good spot and stay glued to it. I watch a hundred rigs go back and forth all day long. Back and forth, back and forth. No horns or hooves showin. While I fill my pickup. I've had plenty of guys get ants in their pants after half an hour, jump in their rig and before they are out of sight up the road there are a dozen bou standing out in the muskeg. I get there before daylight and park . So some knuckle head can't say I'm hiring in on their spot. The other mistake / hilarious thing I see people do . Is try to put the sneak on a band of caribou in the brush. All those eyes, ears and noses, Noisey brush, ect. There are places a caribou will tolerate movement and noise, out in the brush is not that place. Course , it took me several years to figure out how to hunt migratory caribou. Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."
