I have just finished a hunt in ANWR. I had a great time. However , there were a couple of unusual events. One young man fell with his pack on and wrecked his knee. He seems much better but has a bit of a limp. The second is far more serious . A client was mauled by a grizzly sow. He is lucky to be alive . This person had shot both a sheep and a grizzly. His grizzly was being fleshed . He got bored and walked to a vantage point not far from camp. When he got there, on the other side of the vantage point, he noticed a caribou which had been covered up . Needless to say that was a bad sign. He turned to leave and the griz was headed his way. He took his rifle off his shoulder and attempted to load a round in the chamber but short stroked it and heard a click. The griz chewed him up pretty well . Miraculously, he has no broken bones, no tendon damage and no tears in arteries . He does have major tissue damage and one ear was severely damaged . He was flown to Deadhorse by the outfitter. Life Flight took him to Fairbanks where he underwent 4hours of surgery. He was in the hospital a few days and is now home in Texas.

Yikes, hope he heals well. Larry, aren't those about the most aggressive Grizzlies around? Roger ___________________________ I'm a trophy hunter - until something better comes along. *we band of 45-70ers*

That is what I am told. We had them swat toward the plane when we flew over .

. Lucky not more serious! Never a great idea to go walk about in the bush! And now tell us Larry, what did you hunt / shoot ? . "Up the ladders and down the snakes!"

If he had a Blaser, the bear would have run away.... Glad you are safe! You are getting a little long in the tooth for backpack hunts in the tundra...

Ross: Unfortunately, I have to agree.

Having unloaded chamber is the safest way to carry a rifle.

Yes and and any Blaser made since the R93 can be carried with a round in the chamber! So shoulder push bang. Pretty quick.

It's part of Natural Law, right after the freedom to defend yourself it says "Do not allow Blaser rifles to foul your soul".

I personally don't walk anywhere away from a camp where large predators can be or are, without a rifle or handgun, fully loaded and chambered, for any reason whatsoever-bathroom, sightseeing, etc.. Many years ago while on my first hunt to the Bubye Valley Conservancy (BVC) in Zimbabwe with PH Martin Nel, I made the simple mistake of walking about 50 yards from the truck during a break to look at some tracks near a water pan. Martin and his tracker had walked in another direction, with his rifle, looking for some buffalo tracks. I heard Martin yell at me to walk backwards slowly to the truck, keeping my eyes on the water pan and my back to the truck. I did so, and when I got back I got chewed out and told to never leave the truck without my rifle. He then asked me to take my binos and look at the other side of the water pan. I did, and there were two very big male lions laying there in the thornbush. They had apparently been watching me very intently as I got near the pan. Lesson taught and lesson learned.

Something similar happened to me when I did my first-ever safari in Masailand while doing a recce of the area prior to the client's arrival when I abruptly stopped, piled out of the truck and made a beeline for a clump of scrub to rid myself from a dire bout of the Bombay Foxtrot. Once my mission was successfully accomplished, my Game Scout made no bones about letting me know that the Selous Buffalo (cattle was his term of reference) were not to be compared to those of Masailand. I soon discovered what he was talking about and as UEG said, "lesson taught, lesson learned". Unfortunately, some others learnt the hard way and some never got a second chance. So, when in DG terrain, rather be safe than sorry.

I have learned my lesson. Fortunately not the hard way. We were elephant hunting in Botswana. We stopped at this magnificent shady place for lunch. I felt nature calling and walked off a short distance. No gun. I came back and was doing something on the passengers side of the truck. I noticed something moving on the other side of the truck. An elephant bull was walking by not 3 feet from the truck. I do not walk around without a loaded gun in DG country by myself.
