Probably you all know but you can purchase all your Alaska tags at the old price for next season. Till 12-31.
Did not keep up with posts so this may be common knowledge.

Joe,

I called AK,F&G a few weeks ago for my '17 hunters. You can buy your '17 hunting license now at the '16 price but tags will not be available until July 1 and at the new prices.

Yep. You have to add your 2017 license and then the web site allows you to add 2017 locking tags at current prices.

I did this last week, so the tags are not in my hands yet. They took my money and haven't called to tell me the order was cancelled which I take as a good sign.

I just bought deer and bear tags today for my daughter and I for 2017. Bought hunting licenses for '17 & '18 also at 2016 prices. That will be our christmas presents. I would have bought moose and grizz tags for me, if I had a line on a good cancellation hunt Big Grin

I have a moose hunt booked in Sept 2017. The outfitter e mailed me last night and told me the $400 locking tag that I need will be $800, unless I buy it before Jan 1 2017.

I will be contacting you in the next month or so when I get more of a plan together. I'm trying to shoot for a moose/grizz combo hunt in '18 or even a separate spring grizz and fall moose if I can make it happen. I imagine I will be buying grizz/moose tags in the next 2 weeks. Then I gotta goBig Grin

Definitely will be doing a fall Sitka deer/black bear hunt in '17 also with the daughter.

Guys,

I was given some bogus info when I first inquired about '17 Alaska lic/tags. I apologize for posting the incorrect info on that issue. You certainly can buy your '17 lic/tags at the'16 rate until Jan 1.

Was that increase a legislative bill or something that the AK residents voted on as an amendment?
Got my license and griz tag bought along with six chances for a caribou unit.

It went through the legislature--survived
conference committee negotiations at the very end of the session and was signed by the governor.

The new non-resident hunting license increase includes a $30 surcharge for intensive management (i.e. predator control). Pretty steep--especially when intensive management (in effect since 1994) has not resulted in significantly more moose taken by hunters. This despite aerial shooting of wolves by private pilots, gassing wolf pups in dens, trapping bears, shooting bears from helicopters and selling bear parts.

Predator control might make more moose, but not necessarily more legal moose. Then add one bad winter in there every couple years and the whole predator program is almost a wash.
Although they collared some grizz bears in the maclaren river country a handful of years back. Seven of them if I recall and between those seven six averaged 24 moose calves in three weeks and one had 48 moose calves in those three weeks. Shocked everyone.

My 2017 moose locking tags showed up in the mail, $400, versus $800 after Jan 1.
Surprised that they allowed that.
