Alaska Air Guardsmen rescue sheep hunter near Rohn

Airmen with the Alaska Air National Guard’s 210th, 211th and 212th Rescue Squadrons rescued an injured sheep hunter.
JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska — Airmen with the Alaska Air National Guard’s 210th, 211th and 212th Rescue Squadrons rescued an injured sheep hunter last night in the Terra Cotta Mountains about three miles south of the Rohn Roadhouse Safety Cabin, an Iditarod Trail checkpoint.

According to Alaska Air National Guard Maj. Andrew Williams, Alaska Rescue Coordination Center deputy director, the mission was opened following a request for assistance from the Alaska State Troopers after the Troopers were contacted via the hunting party’s GPS satellite communication device.

The AKRCC tasked the Alaska Air National Guard’s 210th, 211 and 212th Rescue Squadrons to respond.

An HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter with the 210th RQS launched from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson with two 212th RQS Pararescuemen (PJs) highly trained in rescue operations.

An HC-130J Combat King II with the 211th RQS aerial refueled the HH-60 to extend its mission range.

With the help of communications from the hunting party, crew of the 210th RQS were able to locate the injured hunter, and the PJs extracted him and treated his injuries.

The hunter was evacuated to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage and released to medical personnel there.

Williams credited the hunting party for carrying and properly using a satellite communication device.

“That ability afforded us the opportunity to get real-time knowledge of the extent of his injuries, which expedited the extraction of the individual,” he said.

For this mission, the AKRCC, the 210th, 211th and 212th Rescue Squadrons were awarded one save.

Is the hunter responsible for the costs of the rescue? In Colorado there is a 25cent charge on every hunting license to cover the costs of search & rescue. Local sheriff's offices were getting hit pretty hard on costs of rescuing hunters. Even backpackers & hikers can buy a $1 stamp to be covered in the program.

Cheap insurance.

Great idea, but in this case I am sure it is great training as well - better than a simulation and not terribly unlike rescuing a downed pilot.

In AZ every summer idiots climb mountains around PHX without enough water and have to get rescued. There is no charge, perhaps because they don't want people dying. There was a kid who died a few years ago in the park behind my house - died of dehydration after getting lost.

Grand Canyon rescues people fairly often, but if you can walk out, they will put a ranger with you before flying in a helicopter.

In any event, paying for the last two would go a long ways to preventing stupid decisions.

We were hiking in Colorado last month . We used a guide service. A fee was charged for some local rescue service.

Our guides were involved in rescue operations. Many of the stories they told were of total stupidity.

What is the significance of that ?

How about this one back in June?

https://www.airforcetimes.com/...er-attacked-by-bear/

Hunter gets mauled on a Sunday night. Partner calls the troopers. Air Guard Pavehawk takes off headed 340 miles north west. PJs get blood from the local hospital, then get on a C130 headed the same way. C130 catches the Pavehawk and refuels it in flight, then PJs parachute in with the blood and plasma and start treating the hunter. Pavehawk arrives and carries everyone to Galena to get on the C130 back to Elmendorf, where he's transferred to a running Army Guard blackhawk for a 3 mile flight to the hospital by 9am.

You can't make up training that realistic. From being critically injured 60 miles from an airstrip on the wrong side of the Alaska Range to in the hospital in a matter of hours all on a Sunday night/Monday morning. We already pay to have that capability in our military, nice to see it used when needed to help regular folks in a bad spot.

Agreed. Great training and we have already paid for that flight.

Pretty much that. Just an unofficial 'attaboy' that says you probably assisted in saving a life and did a good deed that day.

Sikorsky used to send you a nice piece of paper with your name and a thank you every time you got one using their helicopters, but way cooler by far was that they said they would read the details over the public address system at the factory the next day to the workers that built the aircraft.

Don't know if they still do that but I always thought that was awesome.
