Tsunami wave washes Aleutian chain; no damage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska Emergency Management says the tsunami from the Japanese earthquake caused a 5.1-foot wave at Shemya, 1.5-foot at Adak, and 1.6-foot at Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands. Shemya is 1,200 miles southwest of Anchorage.

Emergency Management Specialist David Lee at Fort Richardson says there are no reports of damage and no significant damage expected on the coast of Alaska, although that could still depend on the surge in different areas.

The Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the coastal areas of Alaska from Attu to Amchitka Pass in the Aleutians and an advisory from Amchitka Pass along the West Coast to Oregon.

Southeast Alaska was part of the advisory.

Seismologist Paul Huang (Wong) at the center in Palmer says the wave was expected to pass through this region shortly after five a.m. He figured the wave would be one to two feet.

He advised staying off beaches for 4 or 5 hours or until 9 or 10 a.m.

I am on the wrong side of the bay to be affected so we didn't see anything.
Even if we'd have seen a surge we don't have anything in the water so a + or - 8' wouldn't have mattered.

Not sure about further down on the chain but Perryville and Chignik Bay spent the evening in the Tsunami shelters. Not much came of it, a bit of high water but nothing dangerous...

Here in Japan, CNN was reporting that the major thrust of the earthquake was towards the southeast, in the direction of Chile, so that the tsunami should be worst there.

That is not to say that Hawaii, the West Coast and Alaska are free of risk, any I would be interested to learn what others experienced. There is already one report of a photographer being swept away in CA.

watched it come tru harbor other day you dont see a big wave just lots of current for a couple hours

Any issues with radiation fallout drifting that way?

No radiation...The EPA put a monitor on top of one the fire halls in Juneau and it has not detected any thing.
