I just returned from Mongolia and China. The four people on our trip each took an Altai Ibex 40 inches or greater. The largest being 44 inches. In fact, we were all done hunting in 1 and a half days. Hopefully, my picture appears below.


We saw lots of Ibex, but had to work for them. It was a physical hunt (even with horses) and probably more than I was ready for at the time.

Additionally, we went to China for a few days. This went off without a hitch and the China Women's Travel service did an absolutly perfect job on handling the gun imports into China as well as our private tours. The China Women's Travel Service is a class act.

We did book this trip through Cabela's which I would never do again. (And I do me never!) If looking for a trip to Mongolia, use Batsukh through Mongolian Travel USA. Cabela's is lost when it comes this trip and we did most of the work and research for this trip. There are numerous reasons as why and I could type n forever about why. But, it is typcial Cabela's crap.

I booked my ibex hunt through Cabelas; wrote about it in the March issue of Sporting Classics. I thought it was one of the smoothest trips of my life. What happened?

Two years later I booked a Tanz hunt with them and it was not so great. I think a lot depends on the hunting consultant you get. Greg S. did my ibex hunt; Russell Seele screwed me in Tanz. I will say this about Cabelas, though: I bitched and got back the money for the charter that was not mentioned in the contract.

The largest problem with Cabelas is the lack of communication and lack of attention to detail. Ed Beattie and Frank Colde kept passing the buck particularly when I was pointing out mistakes. Once they sell you the hunt, they are done except for sending a bill.

I guess the most humurous, and potentially problematic, was that we where sent our Chinese gun permits (with a note to be sure and carry these) after we left the country. At the very least, they should have been smart enough to delete the timestamp of when they received the permits, which was long before we left.

Also, they forgot to tell us that the Mongolia domestic airlines charge $2.50/kg extra for a total weight of all bags (inc. carry on) greater than 15 kg. Shit, my gun case weighs almost 30 pounds with a rifle in it. Payable, by cash only of course.

I could go on, but I don't think it is worth it.

The hunt is about $3200. Airfare was $2000 (inc. China).
$300 for documentation, $350 for in country airfare. China was an extra $1200 plus added some airfare dollars. Around $1000 in tips. $250 in extra baggage. In short, you can go to Africa for about the same or less and shoot more animals. But, any sheep hunt is getting pricey these days.

Oh yeah, don't forget and plenty of beer money!

I think Mongolia is super deal. I just finished an elk hunt that cost more than the ibex hunt in Mongolia. I seriously doubt you can shoot much of anything in Africa for the same quid.

A thousand in tips? Wow, that is way more than I paid.

I don't want to sound like I am Mr. PT, but I didn't find the hunt particularly physically challenging; it is certainly easier than either a western elk hunt or an Alaskan sheep hunt.

Look like a great hunt, Ibex is high on my want to hunt list.

Just returned from the same hunt with Juulchin, 3 days ago. I see we had the same interpreter, Tokso, good guy. I know Juulchin has many camps and it is obvious that some are much better than 0thers. My partner and I hunted 5 days instead of the 3 and he saw no Males over 40" and I saw only 2 in that time. We were not able to get to the two over 40". We ended up shooting 38" Ibex on the 3rd day and it is a good thing because we never saw another male Ibex again after that. We also had another group of hunters come in on top of us and we had the camp booked to ourselves. We lost our guides for one day because of this. Other than the hunting area Juulchin did a great job. We didnt know about the 15kg baggage either. OUCH! Nice trophies by the way....

I guess the terrain must vary as much as the quality of the hunting areas as this was the most physically demanding hunt I have ever done. I am 32 year old professional athalete and it nearly killed me. IMO much more demanding than hunting Sheep in the Alaskan Range. I paid about $1000 in tips also.

Glad you had a great trip! We had a similar experience with the hunting guides. After we shot our first animals, the guides had to leave and go to a "wedding" so there was no opportunity to shoot a 2nd Ibex.

Yep, that is Tokso, and he is a good guy. He even took us fishing in Hovd since we lost our guides.

Also, AnotherAzwriter's comments did perplex me, so I am glad to see our experiences where similar.

We had the same experience that you had!!! Really tough physical hunt and very little game.
Where did you shoot the Gazelle?

I shot the Gazelle in the destert about 1 hour south from where we were hunting. We were hunting for Ibex in the the last little bit of mountains before you get to the desert, Our camp was only about 100 miles from the Chineese border or so they said. Our camp was 135 miles by GPS south of Hovd.

Maybe we hunted different areas; I was 10 hours south of Hovd. I thought the hills were gentle compared to scree covered AK range mountains, and the lack of busting thru thick willows was a real treat too.

I hunted there in 99 and saw plenty of males. I shot a 45.5 inch ibex on the third day. Passed on the gazelle as I didn't want to chase them in the jeep (which was how my crew wanted to hunt them).

PCS: Thanks for sharing, especially the photos. Those little Mongolian girls' smiles are priceless. I've heard Mongolia is great for elk hunting, too.

Mongolian hunters that plan on booking at one of the conventions this year, you need to ask about getting your trophies back. You can no longer bring them with you. Me and a friend hunted the first week of October and were told upon leaving that we would get our trophies within two weeks...... It has now been over ten weeks and no sign of the trophies and no responses from JUULCHIN!! the few responses I got were 6 weeks ago saying they would send them within two weeks. Now they will not return my e mails. This is the last of many problems we had on our hunt, and obviously the most serious of problems. BEWARE!!!!

That sucks... Have you tried contacting Mongolian Travel USA for additional help? Not sure if it would help.

When did the rule change about hand carrying trophies? We hand carried ours back in Sept., no problems.

Thank you so very much for the offer. I finally spoke to tbe manager last night and he said I would have a tracking number on Monday. He this will be the third time I have spoken to him where he has promised me somthing about my trophy shipment. Up to this point nothing has happend that he said would. His name is G. Bayanasgalan I believe is the proper spelling. I do not want to inconvienience you. So if I do not recieve a email with the tracking number by tuesday I will let you know and If you wouldnt mind stopping by there it would be a great help to me and my hunting partner. Who changed the rules? Was it on the U.S. side (Dept of Ag, Customs, USFWS, etc.) or Airlines, or was it some Mongolian agency?

I sure hope you get this straightened out and get your trophies shipped to you in good condition. I've been dreaming of hunting Mongolia for a long time, and will someday as long as it stays open. Congratulations on your hunt and your adventure and my sincerest best wishes on you getting everything resolved to your satisfaction.

The rules were changed on the Mongolian side. They originally told us it was due to hoof and mouth outbreak. I reported this to the Hunting Report and Don Causey spoke to someone in Mongolia directly and they told him this was not the case. In the report the Hunting Report sent out to E mail subscribers, he said that customs in Mongolia had changed thier policies and did not want animal parts going throught the airport. The parts have to go through the cargo portion of the airport. This did not make sense to me either as we had days in Mongolia before we flew out to arrange for this to be done. As far as the skins and trophy parts are concerned my hides were completely dry and could probably take being stored this long. However my hunting partner shot two wolves on the last day of hunting and they were nowhere near dry when we left them. They said they would take care of them but their seemed to me to have no understanding of trophy skin preservation or preaparation as far as skinning went so I do not feel very good about his wolf hides. I will keep you posted.

I just went there. It happens that you hunted with different Juulchin company. The full name is Juulchin World Tours. The other is just Juulchin. Juulchin said they don't have any trophies pending for shipping. They suggested to check with JWT. I phoned the JWT and spoke with the manager and he said your trophies will be shipped within first week after the holidays. They are in process of getting some documents from the concerned authorities but the holidays are getting things delayed a bit. He said don't worry we will send the trophies and gave me a guarantee. I told him to pay great attention to customer service and keep his words. I will talk to him again after the holidays and keep you posted.

I never made it to Mongolia, but I have a full mounted Ibex in my living room, taken by Bill Tarrant many years ago when he hunted there with Watson Yoshimoto. (Done by Klineburger)
The only trophy I have that is not mine, but the gift is meaningful to me. Someday, maybe I'll make it as well.....

I have been aching for a Mongolia hunt forever. It is one of those hunts I think I could talk my father into.

He's kind of a cheapskate, but if I go on many more adventures alone I think he is starting to turn.

What happened with the trophies? Were you able to recover them yet?
