Jack D BoldLarry, base camp was 12,400', we went up as high as 14 and change. I was blowing a bit on some climbs, but that comes with the territory. The nice part is the horses get you almost all the way to where you need to be.
Hunter, the travel time was around 12 hours to Istanbul, another 5 hour flight to Bishkek. The car ride to camp was less than 8 hours from the airport, in a comfortable Toyota 4 runner. Not too bad by Marco standards. I booked with Ermek Bakasov, hunt-kg@elcat.kg.
Thanks again,

May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.

May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Brian ClarkJack congrats to you and your son on a trip of a lifetime. Quick question on gear. I struggle with keeping my fingers warm during cold hunts, besides the mittens which finger glove would you suggest? Again congrats love the mass on your ram.
28 November 2013, 08:09
Jack D BoldBrian,
I have had the same problem. What I found was that even the "best" of gloves do not keep my fingers warm. What we did was wear a thin pair of Mountain Hardware windstopper gloves, and slip my hands into the mitts when not in use. The mitts have a loop to attach them to your wrists. Flick them off as needed and you won't lose them either. Funny thing though, my hands stayed warmer without the liner gloves. Can't say enough about the Absolute Zero. Windproof, water resistant 800 fill down, well made - they really work.
Thanks!

Jack D BoldButch,
Thank you. I am truly blessed. My son is 23 years old and he still wants to hang out with the old man. We enjoyed this trip immensely. We definitely will go back. Lucky me, I have two more sons who want to go.
Frank, the mass on that ram is amazing. He is way heavier than the average Marco, almost looks like an Altai Argali.
Thanks again for all the great comments men. One week's gone by and I am still on a buzz.

Can't wait to get back over there, a Marco Polo in Kyrgyz is in my 5 year plan. I really loved that area of the world.

Congrats to you and your son.
I think im getting Ibex fever.
I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

Turns out, the only spare we had to use was a rangefinder. My chief optics were a pair of new Leica HD-Rs. The rangefinder consistently did not pick up objects, like say a cliff face loaded with Ibex at a quarter mile. Let alone a group of sheep in a bowl down there a ways. The handy spare rangefinder was good to have. It's what I used to range my Ibex. The other two animals were inside of 300, so the distance was not that critical. BTW, the leicas are on the way back to the shop.
Jack - I actually had a similar experience with the Leica's in Tajikistan this past February. Initially I thought it was a battery issue, but after changing the battery and getting the same results I figured something was up. The client I was with had the Swarovski range finding binoculars and they worked flawlessly so we just used those for the sheep. When I got home, the Leica's worked fine at 40 degrees F. The only thing I can figure is that the older Leica's didn't agree with the -10 temps and the range finding components would freeze up somehow.
Something to think about on the next trip over.
