Last Fall I sent some of my clients to Newfoundland for Moose and black Bear. One archer scored on the first day and shipped home 494 lbs of Moose meat. To say he had a great hunt was an understatement. He invited me to hunt Blackbuck on his ranch in the Texas hill country so after the DSC convention, I returned to take him up on his generous offer. The ranch is fenced with old cattle fencing, but with holes in the fence, Blackbucks travel at their leisure. So this fair chase was no "sure thing."
My clients normal quarry is whitetail deer. During the TX deer season, he had been watching a couple of mature Blackbuck rams in his usual hunting area. They would pass through most days stopping long enough to pig out on corn from the feeder he used during deer season. My friend had taken 5 rams before and 3 of them with his bow, but there were two mature rams he was hoping I could tag. As first light broke on our first morning, we began to see movement through the mesquite. Several deer were spotted and within minutes we saw an immature ram passing by. About 10 minutes after first light, we spotted a dark ram moving through the brush. I found him in my scope and when he presented a broadside silhouette, I dropped him with a shot to the shoulder. We waited a few minutes and then walked about 115 yards to where he laid. My friend advised that this was not the larger ram he'd been watching but was indeed the smaller of the two. We hunted that evening and again the next full day without seeing the bigger ram he had been watching. I saw about a dozen immature rams and half that many ewe's. All in all it was a great time spent with a friend. We dined on his Moose steaks (cooked over mesquite wood) and picked up many prehistoric shards of local flint. I've never seen so many quarry sites in my life. Prehistoric man had been hunting that area for thousands of years. Even found a early archaic dart and a large paleo preform left by the Clovis people. LDK

How is Blackbuck meat?

very good. I'm sure how it's prepared will effect taste/tenderness, but it's good.
