Courtney's epic bear hunt

My daughter has decided she love to go hunting and has fallen in love with my young dog Tex. She decided last spring she would like to kill a big bear, bigger then her older brothers first bear.
The last few weekend of June I had time to take her out and give it a try. With a number of nice boars treed over the few weekends she refused to pull the trigger as I wasn't sure they were bigger the Colton's first bear.

WE put some miles on following the dogs, the more bears we caught the more Courtney wanted to go.

Small bears, sows some big boars even we had a great time letting them go to run another day.

June ended and we had to wait for September. With Courtney leaving home to go to high School we spent the week before school started in the mountains (until the storms chased us home)

We dried out that evening and went back to bear hunting with the dogs. The first bear of the day ended up crossing the highway so the dogs where pulled. About noon the dogs got track going and soon the chase was on. Over the next 4 hours we got to see the bear cross the road 3 times, the third time we set up to try and kill the bear. Unfortunately the bear came out with a dog just beyond it giving us a dangerous shot which could have passed through and hit the dog.
Tex, "Coutney's dog" hit the road with a nasty bite on his back, it was right about then Courtney said she was going to dump that bear even if was smaller then "Colton's bear!"
I just about pulled the dogs off as another dog showed up with his share of holes as well. Just about the time I was talking of hiking in to get dogs The Garmin showed treed.
The rest is history with a short mile downhill walk into the tree( and long mile uphill walk out with hide and meat, Courtney killed her first bear with one great shot from her 243 shooting 100 grain Nosler partitions.

Courtney with Tex

Courtney calls each night from town and wants to go and fill a second tag on the weekend.

On a side note Tex is walking around fine now and the swelling is going down daily. The other two, Zoey and Tredster and well on the mend and will be out again this weekend.

By the way it was the same size as her brothers bear which was just fine with.

I remember when you killed your big boar, little TEX face barking that mean boar. When we arrived he came for a quick visit and then went right the bear again. It was about then I knew he would make a bear dog.

Well done Courtney.

Yours is the type of story I love to hear. Bringing the next generation along is probably what we need most. Doing it with hounds just makes it that much better. Congratulations to father and daughter!

With Courtney heading of to college this year, stories like this will get fewer over the next while.
Sure will miss her smiling face around the house.
