We just finished our Tahr hunt in NZ and have had a really great time. We stopped off for 5 days in Aussie country to visit my friends and hunt deer with them. My hunting buddy Al took a very nice Red Stag there. The weather has been rainy since we got to NZ but we caught a window and flew into the hut. We were very lucky and both shot Tahr the first day there. I will post pictures later with help from Charles or some other kind member. Hawkeye47

Thanks for posting the Pictures Charles. We had a magnificent time after the terrible storm blew through and the weather turned good. Besides the Tahr we shot Ducks and hunted Hare and possum at night. Midwest Airline lost our baggage in LA so won't know what shape our Tahr capes and ducks will be in until tomorrow. The box with our trophies is supposed to be in KC at 12:20 tomarrow. I look forward to another trip to NZ for Chamois,Fallow and of Course DUCKS!!!! Hawkeye47

Our trophies made it to KC at 12:20 today. I picked them up and transported them to our Taxidermist. After checking them he says the capes are in excellent shape and the ducks will be OK as well!!!! Hawkeye47

Hi David, We first dropped off in Melbourn and met with my friend Norm Nelson. We hunted Red and Fallow for 4 days in Aussie land. My friend Al shot a nice 17 pointer and I passed some small stuff because I have a very good Red already. Enjoyed seeing old friends and hunting together!!! Next we flew over to Christchurch and met our host for the N.Z. hunt. He had found some good Tahr back in the rough country but a storm was coming through the area and we couldn't get into the Hutt where we planned to spend 6 days hunting. We finally caught a break of about 12 hours and flew into one valley in the morning and found the Bull I wound up shooting. My hunting buddy Al went into another part of the area and located a second good Bull which he took late in the day. We called in the Heli and got back down before the next front came in later that night. It was some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen but also some of the most steep and rugged. I was a bit disapointed that we never got to spend more time in the mountains but we would have been confined to the hut for almost all of the 6 days. Later we shot several Hares and Aussie opossums with a spotlight and We hunted ducks for 3 mornings so it was a great trip and I would like to return someday for Chamois, Fallow or possibly Sika. I would certainly try to time the hunt to be there for opening week end of duck season. Hawkeye47

Every time I hear of a Tahr hunt, I recall building a nice custom 280 for a customer for a Tahr hunt in Russia, near the end of the cold war. When he got there, the rifle had disappeared in the baggage. It's no doubt being used by some ex-KGB official these days ). He had to shoot his tahr, which turned out to be way up near the top in the record books, with a moisin nagant, military 7.62 with open sights. At the Safari Club awards banquet, he couldn't bring himself to admit what he'd shot it with . "You can lead a horticulture, ... but you can't make 'er think" Florida Gardener
