Stone Sheep - British Columbia 2015

Just returned from a good hunt in Northern British Columbia (Muncho Lake area). Hunted with Art & Crystal Thompson aka Gundahoo River Outfitters.

Weather was pretty crappy. Rain, fog, and wind for most of the hunt. We had a few nice days and those are the days that things got done. Sheep were staying low and in the timber, which made them pretty hard to spot and even harder to stalk. Changed camps a couple times. Overall a pretty tough hunt. Got my ram on day 9 or 10 I think. Had a goat tag, but only had one day to chase them. Saw some goats but nothing worth climbing after. By that time my knees had had enough anyways...

It was my first real horse back hunt. Had rode horses in Azerbaijan, but those were small and also the total time on the horses didn't amount to much really. Art's horses were very big and strong and were a totally different experience. Here is a great example.

Hightower

Riding and hiking all day definitely took its toll on my knees and ankles. I'm still sore in a few places.

Anyways. Here are a few pics and a short video I put together.

My ram is a bit unusual. As you can see his left horn is much tighter and longer than the right. We aged him at 9-10 years old. I thought he was very cool and was stoked to take him.

Video of walking down the spine of the ridge reminds me of my Mt. Goat hunt. Brings back good memories. I did have a moose tag but didn't see anything big enough.

Congrats on your Ram, he's beautiful.

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

thanks guys, I appreciate it.

In case you're wondering about the first shot looking really HIGH. I agree. But my guide must have seen something that you can't see in the video, because after the first shot I actually held about 6 inches high on the next two shots and they did the job.

Interesting to note that my leica hd-b's gave me a range of 440 and with angle comp said 395. I held for 400, but shot low... Should've just held for 440 to begin with.

Really unique ram! Nicely done.

yup! sent the scope back to swarovski and got it back about a week before I left for this trip. Hated to mess with it after it shot well for so long. I think it was shooting a bit right on these shots. Still got the job done thankfully.

Very interesting gun choice. I have been thinking about going to this caliber. I have heard great things about it!

A very awesome, and unique ram. I have been a part of the taking of a Dall ram that had a similar horn configuration. After talking with various biologist's and sheep experts, the consensus was that the ram had been injured sometime in its early life, which cause the horns to grow differently. I would venture a guess that this ram had a similar fate, which cause its horns to grow in a unique configuration.
