Matt Woodward/Borderland Adventures is offering what I think is a great value for the dollar elk hunt in NM. I just returned from the hunt and was very impressed with all aspects of the experience. Matt provided everything he said he would and frankly far more than I expected.

The hunt is conducted on a small ranch in unit 12 adjacent to the Mariana Mesa near Omega, NM. There are only two tags available for this hunt. The hunt can be conducted 1-5 Oct or 7-12 Oct during the rut. This offers a great opportunity for two friends/family members to hunt together or for one hunter to have the whole ranch to him or herself.

The hunt is all on foot but the terrain is moderate and anyone of fair physical condition should have no problem. A vehicle will be used for retrieving the elk. No packing meat required by the hunters.

Hunting is done by calling or spot and stalk. Both methods worked nicely for us although the bulls were not bugling their heads off. We did however have a couple of exciting 25 yard encounters.

I shot a 340 class bull even with less than ideal conditions including rain, hail, high winds and retarded horn growth do to the very dry summer. I would expect anyone on a normal year to take a very nice bull and a bigger one than I took. I think realistic expectation would be 330-370 B&C. Four bulls were seen on my hunt that were much bigger than the one I shot.

Matts equipment was excellent including the camp that was comprised of good quality tents, 40" wide cots with 2" pads and freshly laundered sleeping bags and pillows. Cook tent was spacious and the food truly was incredible. Matt also had a camp trailer on site with flush toilet and shower. The whole set up was very comfortable particularly in the 3 days of nasty weather we had.

As you can probably see I'm pretty excited about this hunt as I've turned this ad into an ad/hunt report combo but I really can't say enough good about how Matt is conducting this whole hunting experience.

There is no draw to deal with and the hunt price incldes landowner tag, license, airport pick up and drop off in Albuquerque. Everything is included except a tip for the guide if you think one is warranted. Matt also supplies everything you need other than your personal items and hunting gear.

Thanks for catching that. Observer is $1,000 flat fee and they can participate as much or as little as they want during the hunt.
