My son is graduating from the USNA in May and has a block leave before his duty assignment from 7/26-8/24. It has been quite a journey at Annapolis and he would like to have a father/son trip before he has to report to his duty station. I know it is short notice, but what are AR's suggestions for a fish or hunt trip in the USA, in the early August time frame. Thanks in advance. | ||

As has already been suggested, it’s a great time to be in Africa. Otherwise, think about taking him up to Alaska during that time frame. Lots of very good fishing opportunities. Congratulations to your son! That’s a great accomplishment and will serve him well as he goes through life. | |||

Aug is a tough time to hunt much of the USA. Perhaps Texas for exotics or pigs would be a good choice. Or The upper midwest for prairie dogs. Some archery seasons open in Aug so that could be in the running. As far as fishing perhaps the SE coast for Redfish and whatever else is biting. I believe its that time frame that a friend of mine does well off of So Carolina's coast. The Great lakes may have some salmon/walleye fishing good at that time too. Africa would be my first choice, but a he is not allowed to travel to all countries and must have the proper paperwork and permission to leave the USA. After four years at the Academy, he just wants an easy trip. I'm looking at Axis deer in Texas, as well as fishing in Alaska or the Rockies. Are there better exotics to think of in Texas that time of year? Not sure if hunting would be enjoyable in the August heat. Just want a trip we will both enjoy and remember. | |||

Wyoming Antelope is open then, I don't know whether or not there are landowner tags. Fishing in AK is probably your best bet. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.  What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances. | |||

I’m not sure if Argentina is restricted, but that’s a beautiful time to go there. I’ve done summer exotic hunts in Texas. It can be miserable. Whatever you decide, I’m sure it will be great just to be outdoors with your son before he can do it again for a while. Blacktail/fishing combo on Kodiak island. I’ve been there for the August 1 opener and had a great trip. Velvet bucks were a blast to hunt. The pinks and chums were in the rivers. Fishing charters for kings,silvers,halibut,and lings are good at that time too. | |||

I heartily recommend tuna fishing out of Venice, Louisiana. I have some outfitters who we like if you decide to go that route. | |||

As much as I love my home state of Texas, planning a hunt here in August is a tough row to hoe. Last year, we had about 2 weeks of over 110 degrees F. Many of those days were 115 to 116. I'd vote for Alaska. Tell your son I said Congrats!!! I left the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in 93. It was one of the best stints of my lifetime. I wish him fair seas and following winds!  | |||

My Son In Law is a captain with VooDoo charters down in Venice, LA. They do Tuna trips and have the best boats. Mostly 39’Yellowfin center consoles with 3 or 4 outboards. Ask for him, Chris “Heavy” Helveston, there is no better captain in Venice. They can recommend some inshore charters for trout and redfish while you are there. If it has to be in the US, I second fly fishing the Madison and Yellowstone, or finding a spot in Alaska. If British Columbia is an option, check out Spatsizi Wilderness Vacations. Remote, stunning country with lots of fish and wonderful hospitality. I agree with others that exotics in Texas would be tough. It will be hot and miserable early August. Not the best time for hunting around here. | |||

I know you said US. Is his travel restricted by the Navy to US soil? I agree with DCS. Argentina is a great place that time of year. You can do a father-son mixed bag bird trip at a relatively inexpensive price point. There are outfitters who offer these hunts regularly. A fishing trip to Costa Rica or Panama also makes for a great bonding experience. I've done this with my grandson twice. Congrats to your son, and to the rest of the family as well. The journey to graduation from any of the academies is a challenge for the entire family. Appointments don't come easy and sacrifices are made by all. His hunting generally is "on call" for problem bulls on various ranches. You would want to contact him soon so he can start prospecting ranches for you. August is just before the Big HIBT and other tournaments get rolling and you should get into BIG Marlin and Yellowfin tuns. For hunting, highly recommend the Y O ranch or two dot ranch in Texas. Might check out their websites. One of the owners of both is Byron Sadler. Huge bowhunter and huge supporter of Marines.
