Tony Lee/Westwind Guide Service has 2 openings for baited spring grizzly in Unit 13 B. Bear densities are high in this area and Tony will have multiple baits available when you arrive. if you can be fairly quiet in the blind you should have an opportunity or multiple opportunities.

In '17 (all pix are from 6/17) Tony had 4 clients and took 8'4" and 7'2" bears. A Third hunter turned down 7' looking for a monster and the fourth hunter had bears coming in but couldn't make it happen.

This is a night hunt and you'll spend 10 hours plus in the blind each night. There is accommodation made if you just can't stay awake allowing you to take a nap.

Your guide will pick you up at http://alpinecreeklodge.com/ and take you out to the bait site via ATV each evening.

Dates: June 22-29, '18

1x1 8 days $6,000 discounted from 1x1 10 days $14,500.

Includes:

Pick up in Anchorage
8 full hunting days

Trophy care and delivery to expediter in Anchorage.

Extras:

Lic $160

What are the dates open?
This would have to be in June correct?
Does this include the lodging and meals?
I am assuming you need to get to the lodge from Anchorage on your own correct?

Really good deal! Have been putting money aside for a bear hunt for 4 years but this is still out of reach. Hope you have something similar in a few years times.

If that part of my bucket list was not already filled I would love to do that hunt. Sitting in some flimsy blind in the twilight with a big grizzly walking around in the bush would be a great experience, for sure.

Not that my opinion is the least bit important but I really wish that these fabulous animals are not photographed by a bloody garbage barrel.

Scruffy,

What I find with a lot of trophy pix is that folks are pretty pumped about the kill and kind of forget about what the picture site looks like. I do agree though that the pic would have been better without the bait barrel in the background.

I’m still in Alaska until July 3rd and do not have the ability to download pics until I get back. Fred may beat me to it when he gets back home to West Virginia. However, I won’t be posting a pic until then. To recap, Fred shot his grizzly the first hour of the first night. I shot mine at 8:15 pm on night four. It was never dark-just twilight for two hours late each night-and plenty of light all night. Great guides, great accommodations, great outfitter, and great food. We also shared the lodge with Jake Jefferson and his clients. They were hunting in a different area of the game unit, I believe on the other side of the Susitna River. Our outfitter still had one other hunter in camp when we both left on Day 5 of the scheduled 8 day hunt for Anchorage, and I am pretty confident that he subsequently shot his bear, as they had been on a good bear for 2 days waiting for the right shot. Alaska had a very late Spring this year and the bears had not really been out and cooperating until this last week, so for our group, I believe that it was perfect timing.

This hunt was all that was advertised and more. The accommodations were great as was the food. I can't say enough about Tony and his guides they were all great. Everyone was very nice and friendly. My hunt was over the first hour of the first day after the shot Mike my guide said we will wait ten minutes to retrieve my bear and within two minutes four more bears came out. I would highly recommend this hunt for anyone wanting to hunt grizzly.

That's a good looking grizzly. I like a blonde bear.

Chrissy does know how to put out the grub. Did you try to catch any graylings?

No rubs on either mine or Freds. I shot mine with an MG Arms .325 WSM. I believe that Fred shot his with a 300 Dakota. I tried to post pics of the lodge and Chrissy's cafe, but I screwed up. Will maybe try again later.

I'm glad you 2 had a good hunt. I'm headed back in 2020. I used a 375 Ruger on my bear. Did Chrissy made you hot soup for you on your night hunts? She made some kind of cream chicken soup that was really good.

Mine will be a full body mount. No, Chrissy never provided hot soup on our night hunts. Not sure why. We were left to our own devices to make up sandwiches, etc. for our night hunts. We also had a lot of traveling tourists stopping by, and some actually staying at the lodge, during our hunt. Made for some awkward conversation at times, as it was obvious that many of them were not hunters and/or did not approve of hunting, per se. The hunters usually kept to themselves watching cable t.v. and sitting in the lounge area. We also ate, either before or just after the other lodge guests. Big Grin The owners of the lodge, however, are hunters and trappers, and their oldest son shot a grizz while we were there, but they never recovered it due to the shot being too high into the hump.

Congratulations fellas. Those are great looking bears and glad you enjoyed the experience.

This baited grizz/brown bear hunting might be just the ticket for us working folk to be able to hunt the big bears that would otherwise be prohibitively expensive.

Fred and Vaughn,

I checked your progress when I got out of the Bush following my Aussie buffalo hunt and knew you had scored but I hadn't seen your reports until now. Big congrats to you both. I want to acknowledge you both for getting immediately on board and taking care of your part of the arrangements without delay to make your hunt happen on very short notice. Thanks for letting me play a role in your Alaska adventure.

Cheers,

Mark
