This has been on my Wish List for a while, and is very interesting. Can you expand on hunt location and style? How did hunters do in 2012? Pictures of recently taken stags?

Thank you
Orvar

If you are hunting the Victorian high country, it is mostly state forest or national park, I believe that there is no trophy fee payable as it is public land.

That means nothing.... There are plenty of sambar on private property too - and less hunters!!! In any case I would be happy to pay $2300 to a guide as trophy fee for a sambar - even if he puts it all in his pocket - if he put in the time and effort scouting the animals, etc, etc. These trophy animals do not grow on trees and a 5-day hunt does not just mean five days work for the guide - there are many more days of work involved.

Yes a good sambar is a tough nut to crack. The OP's rates are great for a good sambar hunt in beautiful country.

I have been in quite a few monstrous trophy rooms and this is a beast that is rarely seen on the wall.

Thanks for the enquiry Ovar. Our hunts are conducted in various locations depending on the time of the hunt, prevailing weather conditions, 4WD vehicle access - e.g snow falls. As an example - 'high country' hunts are conducted in the Victorian alps - approx. 5 hours drive north from Melbourne in the vicinity of Dargo township (check Google Earth) and many other areas near and far from there. Otherwise, we'll hunt anywhere that we've located sambar deer that will provide the hunter with a good opportunity to take a quality stag. This could be in any number of areas, some only a few hours drive from Melbourne. We have access to private properties, some also abutting public land, so as above, we hunt where we have located deer in the lead up to the hunt.

These are not easy hunts - and taking a good trophy is a real challenge, hence the cost and structure of our hunts. We can't guarantee a good stag, but we can guarantee you'll have a great, challenging time hunting what is a tough-to-get animal, as sambar stags have a reputation of being the hardest deer to nail. Fact.

As for hunting style, hike out of camp and start to spot and stalk which will also involve extended periods of glassing to locate a shooter stag, noting that all deer are where you find them! We will move camp as the need arises; all part of the deal. We have years of hunting experience in a 'shit-load' of areas in Victoria (private and public land). For our hunts, expect to spend available daylight hours in the field. On your return to camp we'll provide cooked meals (dinner and breakfast, with a packed lunch for the field) and decent camp-style (tent/cabin) lodging. Tented lodging (spike camps) is similar to Alaska moose and/or bear hunts if you've experienced these. The focus of the trip is on the hunt - not the camping, but I'm positive that you'll enjoy the whole sambar stag experience.

Fire away with any other questions. Thanks again.
