If you wanted to hunt just plains game say 7 days and specifically 2 or 3 good old bushbuck (broken horns inc), where would you go ?

Appreciate comments / replies inc from Outfitters!

Asking for a friend Cool

Cheers

Ps. I know East Cape RSA has good bushbuck (been there seen it and done it and am going back) but I dont think or know if you would get quota / permission for 2 - 3 rams in one hunt.....

I love hunting bushbuck and always try and include them wherever I hunt if they occur in that area.

However, you are correct, quotas are extremely tight. The only real place where multiple bushbuck was a possibility was Uganda. Two types and the outfitter couldn’t determine if one ram was a nile or EA Bushbuck. He mentioned that if it was not a Nile, he had quota for more and we can hunt another one.

Since you travel around SA, why not do a Cape bushbuck in KZN and EC and then head to Limpopo for another Big Grin

Natal has some good bushbuck. With planning could do 2 or 3 hunting some of the big free range areas.

I just did two 10-day hunts in South Africa. I hunted first with Marius Goosen of KLM Safaris near East London and got an exceptional Cape bushbuck. I also got an excellent bushbuck there in 2023 which was a little smaller but I think more handsome due to horn shape. I could not ask for 2 nicer bushbuck in 2 trips.

I also hunted for 10 days with Dieter Prinsloo of Mattanga Safaris in the Limpopo area. I saw a lot of bushbuck with Dieter and got a good Limpopo bushbuck, but didn't find a monster.

I would definitely recommend both hunts.

Hi Charlie,

I also hunted with KMG in June and shot an extremely old ram. Horns worn down to about 14" a crippled front leg and almost no teeth. Killed a much bigger one in 2022 with them an d they were way more excited about the old broken down ram. As they say "age always beats score". Last night of the hunt my sone missed a giant ram. Great group and I will hunt bushbuck with them again for sure.

Thanks for the comments and ideas. Never thought of Uganda - something to look into in the years ahead!

Dale, I know Marius and Dieter and have hunted with both and taken great trophies with both of them. We are heading back to the Eastern Cape in September with a small group hunting with Marius and Nick. Am hoping that we will get a chance at a good bushbuck ram between us.

Had some exciting hours with Dieter night hunting on a macadamia farm. Saw plenty of bushbuck but we were after genet and civet. Am heading back that way in 2026.

Am thinking that maybe a two or three week / 3 or 4 locations hunt targeting bushbuck could be on the cards for 2026 - top end plains game hunt!

Andrew, I will drop you and email and we can have a call. Thanks.

Cheers

As others have said, Uganda routinely has multiple on your quota/license.

South Africa is the best bet for multiple on one PG hunt otherwise.

I’ve seen some pretty nice older specimens in Mozambique (c-9) and it was pretty PG rich so you got to look at a bunch of animals.

One on the most scenic was hunting Menelik’s Bushbuck in Ethiopia… but that is a pretty expensive hunt.

Bushbuck are pretty ubiquitous. However, everyone seems to like to hunt them, so multiples and shorter hunts seem to not go with them.

Anywhere that I hunt bushbuck we see broken horned old Rams.

This is one I took in the Natal and you can get multiple bushbucks there.

This one on the East Cape

Look up a place called nyamvu safaris in zambia, it has the biggest concentration of free ranging bushbuck in Zambias Luangwa valley. You can take most of Zambias plains game species over there including sable and roan. I counted more than 60 bushbuck in a short one hour drive one afternoon. You will see all shapes and sizes there.

If you are not stuck on a particular subspecies then this is simple… South Africa
East Cape and Limpopo if you want
I hunted a free range spot North of East London once ( Eastern Cape ) and probably saw 20 in the first hour
You could shoot ten in South Africa if you wanted
Other places that are quota based cannot do this (which is most places)
Just left the Caprivi…zero bushbuck quota
Saw several Chobe Bushbuck…not a ton but enough they should have a couple a year (for example)

Everyone always told me how hard Bushbuck were to find and how they had to go on 3-4 safaris to get one.

Funny thing is we spotted one while we were out getting me acquainted after checking zeros.

We hopped off the Land Cruiser and put on a stalk and shot a monster. LF’er in the week I shut an even larger one.

This was in the NW Province. I k ow there are tons of them up in Limpopo.

I enjoy your hunt reports very much so I hope you find a spot to conduct your bushbuck hunt.
I live in KZN province in RSA so maybe I am biased, but without a doubt the best area must be the Umkomaas Valley and surrounding areas. Absolute bushbuck heaven. I'm sure there are a number of operators who will guide you in this area, if not drop me a PM and I will do some local research for you.

Thanks all and last JCHB for all the suggestions and info. I am thinking of focusing on RSA and maybe breaking the trip into 3 or 4 shorter hunts from Limpopo down to Natal and Eastern Cape. A few days of driving and lots of bushbuck hunting! I'll post details of the agenda when it firms up. Cheers all and as I said, appreciated!

Uganda is a good option. In the camps operated by Christian Weth, there are two species and I easily saw 50 or more in three days.

I second the Umkomaas Valley, that's where my first one above was taken. We saw Bushbuck every day and many old rams.
